Traded by the Cleveland Indians to the New York Mets for Ryan Thompson and Reid Cornelius on Mar. 31, 1996 ... After dropping five of first six decisions, went 13-6 with a 3.16 ERA over final 25 starts ... Won six straight decisions from June 8-July 16 ... Did not allow an earned run for 23 consecutive innings from May 22-June 8 ... Fanned career-high nine batters in 3-2 win vs. Atlanta on June 12.

Started the season in the big leagues but was optioned to the Triple A Buffalo Bisons on May 26 after posting a 10.65 ERA in six starts ... In five starts with the Bisons, he went 4-0 with a 3.57 ERA ... Recalled on June 27 to take the injured Orel Hershiser's spot in the rotation (Hershiser had a strained back) ... Responded with a 7-1, eight innings pitched victory over the Royals in his first game back ... Pitched 5.1 innings of relief on Aug. 2, his first relief appearance since May 31, 1993 ...
