Appeared in 40 games during the first two months of the season but his season ended when he tore ligaments in his left ankle while running out a ground ball in Oakland June 6 ... Had a career-high nine-game hitting streak May 7-16.

Opened the year at Huntsville (AA), but landed in the majors July 12, filling in for injured infielder Tony Phillips ... Was caught stealing as a pinch runner in his debut that day ... Started the last eight games of the season in place of the injured Alfredo Griffin and committed one error in 39 chances ... Collected his first major league hit Sept. 26 against Chicago ... Hit a sensational .462 (12-26) in 16 big league games.
