    Random factoids

  • The Yankees hit .183 (42-for-229) for the Series, the lowest average ever for a team in a Series that went at least seven games. The lowest previous mark was St. Louis' .185 against Kansas City in 1985.

  • Arizona posted a 1.94 ERA, lowest since Cincinnati's 1.70 in a four-game sweep over Oakland.

  • Randy Johnson became the first pitcher to win five games in one postseason. He won twice in the NLCS and three times in the World Series.

  • The Game 7 matchup of 20-game winners Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling was the first in any World Series game since 1996 (John Smoltz vs. Andy Pettitte) and the first in Game 7 since 1985 (Bret Saberhagen vs. John Tudor).

  • In 34 Games 7s, the home and visiting teams have each now won 17 times.

  • The Diamondbacks fanned 70 times, most ever in World Series. Oakland fanned 62 times vs. the Mets in 1973.

  • Curt Schilling and Johnson were named co-MVPs. The only other time that happened was 1981, when Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager shared the award for the Dodgers.

  • Mariano Rivera had been 8-for-8 in World Series save chances.

  • David Justice has played in the last three Game 7s and lost them all. He was with Cleveland in 1997 and Atlanta in 1991.

  • For the Series, Schilling won just one game, but was dominant. The Yankees hit just .162 off him (12-for-74). Until he tired in the seventh inning and the Yankees went 5 for their last 9 against him, he held the Yankees to a .108 average (7-for-65).

  • Derek Jeter hit .148. His only RBI was his game-winning homer in Game 4.

  • The Yankees scored only 14 runs in the Series. Eight of those runs came on the six home runs they hit.
