MINNEAPOLIS -- Three players and both managers were ejected when benches emptied in the third inning of the Cleveland Indians-Minnesota Twins game Friday.
Twins center fielder Torii Hunter took exception to an inside pitch thrown by Indians starter Jason Davis and shouted at him. Davis yelled at Hunter to get back in the box, and both benches and bullpens cleared as players rushed onto the field.
No punches were thrown but Hunter had to be restrained by Twins coaches Steve Liddle and Al Newman. Plate umpire Matt Hollowell immediately ejected Hunter and Davis. Crew chief Bill Hohn ejected both managers, Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire and Cleveland's Eric Wedge, as well as Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia.
Davis did not immediately leave the field and even threw a warmup pitch. But after the teams returned to their dugouts, Hohn told Davis he was ejected, and Davis began to charge the ump before being restrained by Wedge.
The tension between the teams had carried over from Thursday, when Sabathia hit two Minnesota batters with pitches and threw inside to another.
Davis gave up two-run homers to Justin Morneau in the second inning and Corey Koskie in the third. Hunter's at-bat followed Koskie's homer.
Hunter was also at the center of a bench-clearing dustup against the Indians last season, serving a three-game suspension for throwing a ball at Cleveland pitcher Danys Baez after Baez hit him with a pitch.
