SAN DIEGO -- Arizona Diamondbacks ace Curt Schilling, hit twice on his right hand by comebackers on Friday night, does not expect to miss his next start. X-rays taken of Schilling's pitching hand after he left the game in the eighth inning against the Padres were negative. The injury was diagnosed as a bruised bone. The news on Saturday was positive for Schilling and the Diamondbacks. "I expect to take my next start,'' said Schilling, who did admit that his hand felt worse than it did on Friday. "Some of the swelling is still there. But I don't expect this to stop me from being out there.'' Arizona manager Bob Brenly concurred with his star pitcher. "I'm pretty confident that he'll be able to go,'' Brenly said. "We're planning on him taking his regular turn.'' Schilling is scheduled to start Wednesday at home against the Chicago White Sox. "(Schilling) was trying to convince me to bring him back on short rest to pitch the first game of the White Sox series (Tuesday) since he only threw 60-some pitches,'' Brenly said. Schilling was working on a four-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks when he was hit by a liner off the bat of Sean Burroughs in the eighth inning. Schilling had thrown just 64 pitches, 50 for strikes. The first comebacker to hit Schilling wasn't as hard hit as Burroughs' ball. Ramon Vazquez hit a bouncer off the index finger of Schilling's right hand. The ball deflected to shortstop Tony Womack, who threw out Vazquez at first base. |
