Sore right hamstring puts Roberts on disabled list

ESPN.com news services

Los Angeles Dodgers: Center fielder and leadoff hitter Dave Roberts was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday by the Dodgers, who activated reliever Paul Shuey.

Roberts, bothered by a sore right hamstring, was getting his first chance to be everyday player since breaking into the majors with Cleveland in 1999. He has started only 32 of the Dodgers' first 43 games because of the hamstring problem.

This is the second time that Roberts has gone on the disabled list. The other time was 2001 with the Indians, when he sat out the first three months of the season after surgery on his left shoulder.

"I didn't really think it was going to come to this point, but we need to figure out a way to get this right,'' said Roberts, hitting .281 with seven RBI. "If I'm reluctant to steal bases and play the game the only way I can play, then I know that I'm a detriment when I'm in the lineup.''

Roberts, who turns 31 on May 31, was tied with Florida's Juan Pierre for the major league lead in stolen bases with 18 following Friday night's 2-1 victory. In that game, he made a diving catch in short right-center after a long run to rob Todd Hollandsworth of a hit.

"I was trying to conscious of it all night long and be smart about it,'' Roberts said. "But it started tightening up as the game progressed. When I made that play in the ninth inning, it seemed like my leg kind of gave way a little bit. But I know I didn't blow it out.''

Shuey returned from a sprained right knee that sidelined him April 24. He is 2-1 with a 0.68 ERA in 13 1-3 innings spanning 10 appearances.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre was inserted into the leadoff spot Saturday night against the Marlins. It is the first time the slumping Beltre (.194, 11 RBI) has hit leadoff since Sept. 6, 2001, when he batted .298 during a 19-game stretch at the top of the order.

Arizona Diamondbacks: Chris Capuano's first major league start will be his last for a while.

Moments after Capuano took the loss in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 8-5 victory over the Diamondbacks on Saturday night, he was optioned back to Triple-A Tucson.

The Diamondbacks purchased the contract of reliever Eddie Oropesa from Tucson to fill Capuano's roster spot and put a second left-hander in the bullpen.

Capuano (0-2) had a 10.13 ERA in three appearances for Arizona, two of in relief. The 24-year-old underwent reconstructive elbow surgery just one year ago.

He allowed seven runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings Saturday night. He walked two, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches, including one that allowed a run.

Oropesa was 2-0 with a 10.30 ERA in 29 games for the Diamondbacks last season. His ERA was inflated severely when he allowed 10 runs in 1 2-3 innings in a 19-1 loss to Los Angeles on Sept. 2.

To make room for Oropesa on the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks moved Craig Counsell to the 60-day disabled list. Counsell is sidelined at least two more months after tearing a ligament in his right thumb.

Texas Rangers: The Rangers activated pitcher Ismael Valdes from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and started him against the New York Yankees.

The right-hander threw five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk, and he left with a 5-2 lead.

To make room for Valdes, reliever Esteban Yan was designated for assignment. The Rangers have 10 days to trade him, send him outright to the minor leagues or place him on waivers for the purpose of his unconditional release.

Valdes had been on the disabled list since April 24, retroactive to April 20, because of tendinitis in the back of his right shoulder.

Yan was 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA in 15 games. The right-hander allowed a run in 12 of his appearances.

Kansas City Royals: The Royals recalled right-hander Kris Wilson one day after sending him to the minors to replace righty Albie Lopez, who was put on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled right groin.

Wilson had not left Kansas City when he was called by Royals management after Friday's game against Toronto and told to remain in town.

He had been optioned to Omaha to make room for right-hander Jason Gilfillan, who made his major league debut Friday, giving up four runs and five hits in one inning.

Wilson was 0-0 with a 4.87 ERA in 10 games. He allowed 25 hits in 20 1/3 innings. He has struggled in May, allowing eight earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Lopez came out of Friday's ballgame after facing two batters in the eighth inning, who both scored. He had pitched a scoreless seventh.

Houston Astros: The Astros placed right-hander Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

The move was made retroactive to May 16.

Oswalt was injured while running bases in Thursday's 6-2 win in Pittsburgh. He left the game after six innings but got the win.

He is 3-4 with a 3.68 ERA in nine starts with the Astros this season.
