Report: Bechler widow to get $450,000 premium

ESPN.com news services

The widow of Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler will likely receive a $450,000 life insurance premium when Major League Baseball's pension committee finalizes her case on Tuesday, sources close to the situation told The Baltimore Sun on Friday.

Kiley Bechler, who is eight months pregnant, was apparently in danger of not qualifying for a premium because her husband did not have 60 days of major league service time (he had 27). A new agreement does cover everyone on the 40-player roster, but those benefits don't go into effect until April 1.

However, the pension committee has found a way to cover Bechler, according to The Sun.

"I expect that to be worked out," union head Donald Fehr told the newspaper on Friday after meeting with Orioles players. "I don't want to say it more specifically, but my expectation is it will be resolved."

Bechler died of heatstroke on Feb. 17 at the age of 23, and a Florida medical examiner linked the death to ephedra, a herbal supplement used by some athletes to lose weight. However, more details will not be known until a full toxicology report on the autopsy is released.

On Saturday, the Orioles will send a private plane to Bechler's memorial service in Medford, Ore. Vice president Mike Flanagan and pitchers Rick Bauer, Mike Paradis, Matt Riley and John Stephens will attend the ceremony, according to The Sun.
