Pitcher dies in crash in native Nigeria

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Milwaukee Brewers minor league pitcher Augustine Ozorede died over the weekend in a car accident outside of his home in his native Nigeria.

Ozorede, an 18-year old right-hander, signed with the Brewers in May as a non-drafted free agent. Ozorede and catcher Gbenga Olayemi were signed the same day and became the first-ever Brewers players signed from Nigeria.

"We are saddened by the loss of Augustine Ozorede," Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said Tuesday. "Our condolences go out to the Ozorede family."

Ozorede was expected to attend extended spring training in Arizona in April.
