Kida expected to recover

Associated Press

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Right-hander Masao Kida, who signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last month, was hospitalized following a traffic accident that critically injured his passenger, an interpreter with the team.

Kida was driving a vehicle that was hit head-on near Orlando late Saturday, Dodgers vice president Derrick Hall said, adding he was told alcohol was not involved and the other driver was at fault.

Hospitalized in Rockledge, the 34-year-old Kida sustained bruising of the abdomen, liver and spleen, a fractured toe and an injured back.

"He should be fine,'' Hall said Sunday, adding that Kida will be hospitalized for at least another day.

Teppei Shiokawa, the interpreter for Dodgers pitchers Hideo Nomo and Kazuhisa Ishii, was flown to Orlando following the accident and underwent surgery to remove his spleen and repair a torn bowel, Hall said.

"They now expect a full recovery. We didn't expect that last night,'' Hall said, adding that Shiokawa was listed as critical but stable and his vital signs were fine.

Shiokawa, 27, should be moved from intensive care to a private hospital room in about three days, Hall said.

"We're monitoring the situation closely,'' Hall said. "It's important for us to have someone with each of them at all times.''

Kida pitched in the majors for Detroit in 1999 and 2000 after a career in Japan. He was 1-0 with a 6.42 ERA in 51 games for the Tigers.

Kida had been scheduled to report to the Dodgers' minor league camp, which began Sunday.
