TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees pitcher David Wells resumed working out Sunday after missing one day with flulike symptoms.
Wells spent time in the weight room, played catch and took part in fielding drills.
"I'm better today, not 100 percent,'' Wells said. "I had a good workout. Sweat it out.''
Wells has been fighting a cold and came down with the flulike condition several days after getting a flu shot Wednesday.
"I'll never take one again,'' Wells said.
Wells was 19-7 with a 3.75 ERA in 31 starts last season. He is scheduled to throw off a bullpen mound Monday.
"My arm is ready to go,'' Wells said. "One day won't make a difference.''
Wells arrived one hour early, not realizing reporting time was 10:45 a.m. Sunday instead of the usual 9:45 a.m. He said maybe he'd better check the board once in a while.
Wells has a book coming out in April from William Morrow titled: "Perfect I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball.'' (An earlier version of the title had "Babes'' inserted between "Beer'' and "Brawls''). Wells, who co-wrote the book with Chris Kreski, thought the title inappropriate: He prefers other drinks over beer.
"Since kids, I've been in two or three fights my entire life,'' he added. "Is that a brawler?''
He deleted some passages that might upset teammates, and said some items in the final version surprised him.
"They added stuff at the end that I didn't know about,'' Wells said.
He is to autograph copies on April 8, the day after the team's home opener, at a Manhattan bookstore and that night at the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls, N.J.
"I told Yogi I'd give him first dibs,'' Wells said.
He said the book's proceeds would pay the college tuition for his kids and leave enough to buy a car.
What a relief
Karsay came through his first full bullpen session Saturday since undergoing back surgery last November without any significant problems.
"My hamstrings are a little tight,'' Karsay said Sunday. "My back doesn't bother me at all.''
