Glavine waiting for responses to counterproposals

ESPN.com news services

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are expected to make counterproposals to Tom Glavine's agent by Wednesday, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports, as the free-agent pitcher continues to mull his options.

Glavine's agent, Gregg Clifton, has made a proposal to both teams of $41 million over four years. The Atlanta Braves also hope to retain Glavine.

Monday, Glavine told ESPN's Karl Ravech that he doesn't expect to make a decision for a couple of days.

The Mets' counterproposal is expected to be for three years and an option year, Gammons reports. It's not certain whether the Phillies will make a four-year offer or whether the Braves will respond to Glavine's agent, possibly with a three-year offer and an option.

Glavine told Ravech on Monday the Braves have not responded to a four-year, $45 million contract counterproposal from his agent. Atlanta, the only major league team for which the left-hander has pitched, had offered an $18 million, two-year contract with an option for 2005.

The Phillies have offered three years and about $30 million. The fourth season -- also believed to be for $10 million -- would vest if Glavine pitches 220 innings in the third season of the deal (2005) or averages 210 innings over the final two seasons (2004-05).

Philadelphia also is waiting for free-agent first baseman Jim Thome to decide whether he will accept a six-year offer worth about $90 million or return to the Indians for $60 million over five year years.

The Mets' offer for Glavine is for three years and $28.5 million plus a one-year option of $9.5 million based on innings pitched.

Glavine told Ravech last week that his former team has done nothing to indicate they want him to return.

When asked if it was unprofessional for a team that he has spent his entire career with to treat him this way, Glavine said "Yup."

"I would make no assumption about going back to Atlanta," Glavine added.

Glavine was 18-11 with a 2.96 ERA this season.
