It might be a fight to the finish if Tom Glavine decides to leave Atlanta. Both the Mets and Yankees have contacted Glavine's agent, Gregg Clifton, who expects to follow up with both New York teams and other suitors during this week's general managers' meetings in Tucson, Ariz., various New York newspapers reported Friday and Saturday. "I spoke to Brian (Yanks GM Cashman)," Clifton told the New York Daily News on Friday. "He wanted to see where Tom was, generally. It was a general call -- chit-chat, how-you-doing stuff. It wasn't anything more than that. "He said, 'We don't know where we're at, but we may be calling you. We have a bunch of decisions to make here.' Honestly, I don't know where it'll lead." According to the Daily News report, Mets GM Steve Phillips called Clifton on Wednesday to touch base about Glavine. "Phillips was saying, 'We think Tom would look good in the rotation with (Pedro) Astacio and (Al) Leiter,'" Clifton told the Daily News. "Then he said maybe we'd see each other in Tucson." The Phillies, meanwhile, have aggressively pursued Glavine, the owner of 242 career victories. The Rangers have also made contact. With their rotation being shaky, the Mets have more interest in Glavine than the Yankees, who already have older starting pitchers in David Wells, Mike Mussina and Orlando Hernandez, and possibly Roger Clemens. Clemens, a free agent, is being pursued by Texas. Clifton said Glavine might visit Philadelphia and New York, among other places, during the week of Nov. 18 to get a better feel for his potential workplaces. "From the very beginning, Tom has expressed a desire to stay in Atlanta," Clifton told Newsday on Friday. "As the process moves on, the realization becomes more apparent every day that he might not stay." The Braves reportedly made one offer to Glavine -- a one-year, $8 million deal with option years -- but it was rejected. Glavine went 18-11 with a 2.96 ERA for the Braves this past season. |
