Wedge, Gonzalez interview with Tribe

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Eric Wedge, the manager of Cleveland's Class Triple-A farm team in Buffalo for two years, interviewed Thursday for the manager's job with the Indians.

"I feel good about being a manager,'' Wedge said after completing his interviews. "It's something that I feel very comfortable with and I'm ready to take on, so I felt I was excited to come here today.''

He is 34 and would be the youngest manager in the majors if he gets the job.

Joel Skinner, the Indians' interim manager for the final 76 games this season after Charlie Manuel was fired, interviewed for the job Wednesday and appears to be the favorite.

Fredi Gonzalez, manager of Atlanta's Class Triple-A Richmond club, interviewed with the Indians on Friday. He's the only candidate from outside the organization.

Gonzalez managed Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate this season and has been selected as Baseball America's top manager in three different leagues. Gonzalez also interviewed for the manager's job with the Chicago Cubs.

Wedge, who played in 39 games as a major leaguer for Boston and Colorado, also has managed Cleveland farm clubs in Columbus, Ga., Kinston, N.C., and Akron.

The Indians want a manager in place within a week after the World Series ends.
