NEW YORK -- New York Yankees vice president Gene Michael does not want to be considered for the general manager's job on the Boston Red Sox.
"It is very flattering to hear that the Boston Red Sox have expressed interest in speaking to me about their general manager's position,'' Michael said in a statement Thursday. "However, I wish to withdraw my name from consideration, as I am under contract to the New York Yankees, with whom I have spent more than 30 exciting and rewarding years.''
Michael is the second potential candidate to say he doesn't want the Boston job. Montreal general manager Omar Minaya told the team earlier this month he'd rather stay with the Expos.
The Red Sox have also reportedly expressed an interest in Sandy Alderson, an executive vice president in the commissioner's office, and Oakland general manager Billy Beane.
Interim GM Mike Port also is in the running to get the job. |
