There has yet to be a definitive stadium plan for the Red Sox, but the organization is looking at its options. According to a report in the Boston Globe, Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino confirmed that the team is looking into possibly renovating Fenway Park rather than build a entirely new stadium. Lucchino stressed that it was one of many options, and that any major renovation would require more internal discussion. An engineering firm hired by the team said that the existing foundation of Fenway could be used to reinforce more seating. According to a source close to the situation, the Globe reported that the firm assessed that the foundation could hold two new decks, which would increase capacity by more than 10,000 seats. That would increase Fenway's capacity to almost 44,000. The renovation could be accomplished over a three-year span, and the project could be done in increments so the team could still play at Fenway. ''We're not prepared to discuss externally plans regarding other forms of renovations -- more extensive renovations -- until we've had the chance to vent more internally,'' Lucchino told the Globe. ''I would caution you against jumping the gun too far ahead on longer-term renovation plans. Some ideas have partially been kicked around, but no comprehensive, long-term renovation plan has yet to be agreed upon.'' The "plan" would involve tearing down most, possibly all, of the ballpark, and rebuilding it, the source told the Globe. The project would cost about 60 percent of the cost to build a new ballpark. The organization had said the cost of a new park would be approximately $300 million, according to the report. |
