Lewis retires instead of reporting to Pirates

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Outfielder Darren Lewis told the Cubs on Friday he's retiring and won't report to Pittsburgh, forcing the teams to rework the trade that sent outfielder Chad Hermansen to Chicago.

The Cubs will send minor league left-handers Ricardo Palma and Tim Lavery and cash to the Pirates, who also sent minor league outfielder Aron Weston to Chicago. The trade began Wednesday as a 1-for-1 deal.

Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said the teams expanded a minor league trade they were already working on when the 35-year-old Lewis decided to retire rather than go to the Pirates.

Lewis didn't seem to fit into Pittsburgh's long-term plans, despite their need for a starting center fielder, and there was speculation they acquired him only so they could trade him elsewhere.

Asked if he was disappointed Lewis wasn't coming -- the Pirates already had a No. 14 with his name on it hanging in a locker -- manager Lloyd McClendon said, ''I can't say that I am, no.

''If he's insulted and didn't want to come here, no, I'm not. But I don't think it had anything to do with our organization. I just think he's at a juncture where he decided to hang them up.''

The Pirates would have been Lewis' eighth club. He was playing sparingly with the Cubs, hitting .241 with no homers and seven RBI in only 79 at-bats.

After learning Lewis wouldn't report, the Pirates recalled outfielder Armando Rios from his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Nashville, even though Littlefield said only a couple of days before that Rios wasn't ready.

Rios has been out since May 16 with knee and calf injuries. He had reconstructive knee surgery last year after being traded by the Giants to the Pirates, then re-injured the knee during a spring training collision.

The sore knee left him unable to generate much power before he went on the disabled list, and he had only seven extra-base hits -- all doubles -- in 109 at-bats.

''We want to get him up here and make sure he's fully ready to go,'' McClendon said. ''He'll get some at-bats against right-handers and hopefully he'll get hot and give us some needed offense.''

The Pirates had been shut out four times in seven games going into a weekend series against the Giants.

Palma, 22, was 1-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 43 relief appearances at Double-A West Tenn and 0-0 in two appearances at Triple-A Iowa. He was assigned to the Pirates' Double-A Altoona affiliate.

''He's got a chance to compete for a job in the bullpen next season,'' Littlefield said.

Lavery, 23, was assigned to Single-A Lynchburg. He was 5-6 with a 2.98 ERA with one save while splitting time at Single-A Daytona in the bullpen and the rotation. He will be a reliever in the Pirates organization.

The 21-year-old Weston hit .239 with 10 doubles, four homers and 30 RBI in 67 games at Single-A Hickory. He was the Pirates' third-round selection in the 1999 June draft.
