OAKLAND, Calif. -- Left-hander Ricardo Rincon was acquired by the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night for minor league infielder Marshall McDougall.
To make room for Rincon, the A's designated Mike Magnante for assignment. Maganante was 0-2 with 5.97 ERA in 32 games. The Indians recalled left-handed reliever Carl Sadler from Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday to fill Rincon's bullpen spot. Sadler, 25, is making his first trip to the majors. He went 4-1 with two saves and a 2.33 ERA in 21 relief appearances for Double-A Akron before moving up to Buffalo in June.
Rincon joins a bullpen that needs help from the left side. The A's optioned Mike Venafro to Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League on Monday, and Magnante allowed three runs on two hits and a walk that night, taking the loss.
''It was somewhat surreal,'' Oakland general manager Billy Beane said. ''I spoke to Ricardo and told him this was the easiest way to get traded. It's the first time in my career I've done this. I wanted to get it done before the game started because I didn't want him pitching against us.''
Rincon, who pitched two-thirds of an inning against the A's on Monday, was 1-4 with a 4.79 ERA in 46 games with Cleveland this season.
McDougall, who plays mostly at shortstop, is on the disabled list with Midland of the Double-A Texas League with a hamstring strain. He's hitting .303 with nine homers and 56 RBI in 102 games this season. |
