NEW YORK -- Jeff Weaver, the Yankees newest player, arrived in New York in the middle of the Yankees' annual Old Timers ceremonies Saturday.
"I guess I couldn't have picked a better day to show up,'' Weaver said. "I'm going to get used to it quick, I'm very excited.''
The 25-year-old right-hander was acquired in a three-team deal early Saturday morning. Oakland sent first baseman Carlos Pena, right-hander Franklyn German and a player to be named to the Detroit Tigers for Weaver, who was traded to New York for left-hander Ted Lilly, and minor league outfielder John-Ford Griffin and right-handed minor league pitcher Jason Arnold.
Weaver was 6-8 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 starts with three complete games for the Tigers and was Detroit's Opening Day starter each of the last two seasons.
How Weaver is going to fit into the Yankees' rotation is still a question.
"I don't know the answer,'' Manager Joe Torre said. "Obviously, it's tough to do with six starters.''
New York's rotation includes lefties David Wells and Andy Pettitte and right-handers Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina and Orlando Hernandez.
Weaver, who is scheduled to start Sunday against Toronto, lobbied to stay in the rotation.
"As far as I know, I'm starting tomorrow and that's all I know how to do, so I hope I stay there.''
Weaver is 39-51 in 111 career games including at least 29 starts in each of his three full seasons in the major leagues. |
