NEW YORK -- Jim Thome homered in his sixth straight game, setting a Cleveland record by hitting an impressive shot off Roger Clemens on Tuesday night.
Thome's rocket off the Rocket was a two-run blow in the first inning. The line drive landed in the upper deck in right field at Yankee Stadium.
Going into this season, Thome was among five Indians players to connect in five consecutive games. Al Rosen did it twice and Larry Doby and Sandy Alomar Jr. also accomplished the feat.
The major league record for consecutive games with a home run is eight, shared by Don Mattingly of the Yankees (1987) and Dale Long of Pittsburgh (1956). Thome is one of five American League players nominated for the 30th spot on the All-Star team. Fans voted their choice and the results are expected to be released tonight. |
