Metrodome, Miller Park facing insurance increases

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- The cost of insuring the Metrodome is on its way up because of the Sept. 11 attacks, according to an adviser to the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission.

Jeff Isenberg, a risk management adviser, estimates that property, liability and terrorism insurance for the Metrodome will increase from $283,000 last year to about $500,000 -- including about $103,000 for terrorism coverage that wasn't a separate cost last year.

The facilities commission -- which runs the Metrodome -- is not alone. Sports stadiums across the country are dealing with the aftermath of Sept. 11 and an overall increase in the insurance market.

Property and liability insurance at Miller Park in Milwaukee was $225,000 last year. This year, the bill was expected to be $2.25 million. The Milwaukee Brewers share ownership in the 2-year-old stadium.

Some franchises face cost increases of 200 percent over last year, according to a major league baseball survey.
