Another gum controversy is brewing. This one is from the mouth of Pete Rose, which was chewed in jest to mock the Luis Gonzalez situation on Tuesday morning's taping of "Mohr Sports" on ESPN. As of Wednesday evening, there were two versions of the gum --which was placed in a beaker and then signed by "Charlie Hustle" on the show -- on the auction site eBay. "I can identify the gum," said Robert Morton, the executive producer of the show. "There was this chunk of something in the gum, a wad of tobacco or something like that. But I'm sure our version has some big viscous-looking thing in it." The authentic piece of Rose gum in the signed beaker is up to $1,275. The fake, which appeared on the site a day later and apparently copied one of the pictures of proof in the original auction, is up to $380. All proceeds from the authentic auction will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Darren Rovell, who covers sports business for ESPN.com, can be reached at darren.rovell@espn.com. |
