Nash given higher bond for alleged rape

Associated Press

GONZALES, La. -- Minor league baseball prospect Gregory "Toe" Nash has been indicted on new charges and given a higher bond for the alleged rape a 15-year-old girl in her home in January.

Nash, 19, was arrested Jan. 22 and booked with aggravated rape, a felony, and aggravated crime against nature, a felony that covers a variety of sex crimes. He was indicted on Thursday with three felony counts of aggravated rape and his bond was raised from $300,000 to $500,000.

Delacy Bureau, 19, of Prairieville was indicted on the same counts and was given the same bond.

Nash and Bureau are accused of breaking down a bathroom door in the victim's home and taking turns raping the girl while the other held her down, prosecutor Tony Falterman said. The two men were at the house drinking with the victim and some female friends before the alleged rapes.

Nash is on the roster of the Princeton, W.Va., Devil Rays, the advanced rookie league team of the major league Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Devil Rays spokesman Rick Vaughn said Thursday that Nash remains a member of the Devil Ray organization.

"He's innocent until proven guilty. So we are just going to let the legal system take its course," Vaughn said.

The team has no plans to post Nash's bail, Vaughn said.

Last year, Nash was facing unrelated charges including domestic violence, simple battery, simple robbery and marijuana possession. Falterman put Nash in a pretrial diversion program in which charges would be dropped if he completed the program successfully.

Nash attracted national attention when an agent discovered him living in poverty in tiny Sorrento, about 50 miles west of New Orleans, and signed him to a $30,000 contract. Nash had dropped out of school at 15 and was playing in a semipro league when he signed the contract.

An April 1 arraignment was set for Nash and Bureau.
