Anaheim Angels: Angels outfielder Tim Salmon will sit out today's game against the Padres as a precautionary measure. He experienced stiffness in his back during Friday morning workouts and left Friday's game after one at-bat. Salmon is day-to-day and is expected to return to action in the next couple days.
New York Yankees: Shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Jason Giambi will both be in the Yankees' lineup Saturday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Jeter has been sidelined by a strained neck muscle the past five days. Giambi has been out since Monday with left hamstring tightness and will be used as the DH. Jorge Posada will make his first appearance behind the plate today following offseason shoulder surgery.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Todd Stottlemyre, sidelined last season with various injuries, pitched three innings in his first spring start as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-0 in a split-squad game Saturday.
Stottlemyre, who allowed two hits and struck out four, threw two innings in relief on Monday and gave up two runs on three hits.
"All that was missing last time out was command of his pitches, and he had that today," said Arizona manager Bob Brenly. "When he missed, he missed in his favor."
Danny Bautista had two hits and drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who won their third straight.
Tsuyoshi Shinjo had two hits and Russ Ortiz threw four scoreless innings for the Giants, who lost their second straight. |
