DETROIT -- Kansas City first baseman Mike Sweeney was suspended for 10 games Thursday and Detroit catcher Robert Fick was suspended for eight for their roles in a brawl last week.

Five players and four coaches were disciplined by Frank Robinson, the vice president in charge of discipline for the commissioner's office.

Robinson accused Sweeney of "charging the mound, fighting on multiple occasions and inciting a bench-clearing incident" last Friday and penalized Fick for "fighting and his aggressive actions during a bench-clearing incident."

The suspensions were to start Friday.

Kansas City pitching coach Al Nipper was suspended for three games, Detroit hitting coach Bill Madlock was suspended for two games and Tigers first-base coach Juan Samuel was suspended for one game, with Samuel's suspension delayed to Sunday.

Robinson fined Tigers outfielder Wendell Magee, Tigers pitcher Jeff Weaver, Kansas City catcher Brent Mayne and Detroit bullpen coach Ed Ott.

Sweeney charged the mound and threw Weaver to the ground in the sixth inning after he said the pitcher called him a profane name.

Benches and bullpens cleared, and Sweeney, Nipper and Detroit bench coach Doug Mansolino were ejected. The game was delayed 12 minutes, and the Royals went on to a 7-3 win.

"I've always been taught to respect the game and play the game hard. I thought he crossed the line tonight," Sweeney said after the game at Kauffman Stadium.

Sweeney had asked plate umpire Mike Fichter to have Weaver move a resin bag from a distracting spot on the top of the mound. Replays showed Weaver said something to Sweeney and turned his back. Sweeney threw his batting helmet at the pitcher and rushed the mound.

Kansas City was en route from Baltimore to Detroit when Robinson announced the suspensions Thursday. Royals spokesman Aaron Babcock said Sweeney had told him he did not intend to appeal.
