ATLANTA -- Greg Maddux's streak without a walk ended at 72 1/3 innings Sunday when the Atlanta Braves pitcher intentionally threw four balls to Arizona's Steve Finley.
In his previous start, Maddux eclipsed the NL record of 68 innings, set by Christy Mathewson in 1913 and equaled by Randy Jones in 1976. Maddux fell short of the major-league record. Bill Fischer of the Kansas City Athletics went 84 1/3 innings without a walk in 1962. Maddux's streak ended in the third, after he already had given up three runs to the Diamondbacks to fall behind 4-0. With Matt Williams at second following an RBI double, Maddux intentionally walked left-handed hitter Steve Finley. As catcher Paul Bako stood outside the strike zone to receive four pitches, the Turner Field crowd realized the significance of the moment. They stood to give Maddux a standing ovation while Finley trotted to first. Danny Bautista moved the runners up with a grounder to third, prompting Maddux to issue another intentional walk to eighth-place hitter Damian Miller to load the bases. Pitcher Albie Lopez grounded out to end the inning. Maddux went 289 hitters since his last walk to Florida's Charles Johnson on June 20, going to three balls on just 22 of them. This was the right-hander's 10th start since giving up that walk. After the third, Maddux had 20 walks in 174 1/3 innings for the season -- eight of them intentional. This was only the sixth time in 25 starts that Maddux walked at least two hitters in a game. |
