MIAMI (Ticker) -- Chris Chambliss, fired earlier this month as hitting coach of the New York Yankees, today was hired by the Florida Marlins as manager of their Class AAA affiliate. Chambliss will manage the Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League. "We are adding a class individual and a quality baseball man with solid leadership skills and championship background," said Marlins director of player development Rick Williams. The Yankees surprisingly fired Chambliss, the team's hitting coach for four World Series titles in five years under manager Joe Torre, on November 3. Many players, including star shortstop Derek Jeter, first baseman Tino Martinez and catcher Jorge Posada, sought outside help from minor league hitting instructor Gary Denbo instead of Chambliss. Management became concerned with this development and decided to dismiss Chambliss, replacing him with Denbo. Prior to joining the Yankees, Chambliss was hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1993 to 1995. Chambliss has managed previously in the Detroit and Atlanta organizations. The 51-year-old Chambliss played 15 seasons in the major leagues and hit .279 with 185 homers and 972 RBI in 2,175 games with Cleveland, the Yankees and Atlanta.
