CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jose Valentin enjoyed his first season with the Chicago White Sox so much that he plans to stay around for a few more years. Valentin agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract with a club option for a fourth year worth an additional $5 million, according to his agent, Bill Moore. "He really enjoyed playing for the manager (Jerry Manuel)," Moore told SportsTicker. "He preferred playing in Chicago." With a payroll of just $37 million, Manuel guided the White Sox to the American League Central Division title and was named AL Manager of the Year. Valentin, 31, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in a four-player trade in January and hit a career-high .273 with 25 homers and 92 RBI. On April 27, he became just the fifth White Sox player to hit for the cycle. In the Division Series against Seattle, Valentin hit .300 with two doubles and three stolen bases. "Jose was a very integral part of our team's success last season, and we are very happy to reach this multi-year agreement with him," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. Moore said that three other teams offered more money, but that his client decided to stay put. The agent, who would not identify the teams, said the final hurdle was passed this morning when Valentin, who was bothered by a pelvic injury, passed a physical. The offensive production helped make up for some shaky defense. He made 36 errors last season and 22 the year before. A native of Puerto Rico, Valentin has hit at least 10 homers in each of the last seven seasons. The White Sox might be one of the teams interested in free agent shortstop Alex Rodriguez, and would find another position for Valentin if the superstar decided to come to Chicago.
