Angels pitchers Dickson, Karl become free agents

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Righthander Jason Dickson and lefthander Scott Karl both refused Class AAA assignments from the Anaheim Angels today, making themselves eligible for free agency.

Dickson, 27, underwent season-ending surgery on his right labrum on June 27 after missing the entire 1999 campaign with the same injury. The four-year veteran went 2-2 with a 6.11 ERA in six starts for Anaheim this season and compiled a 30-29 mark and 4.98 ERA in 73 career appearances for the Angels since 1996.

The 29-year-old Karl was acquired from Colorado on August 22 and also went 2-2 with a 6.65 ERA in six appearances. Karl spent his first five seasons with Milwaukee, compiling a 50-51 mark before being dealt to Colorado in December 1999.

The Angels also announced that lefthander Juan Alvarez and outfielder Jeff DaVanon have been sent outright to Class AAA Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

Alvarez, 27, made 12 relief appearances with the Angels this year, sufferending nine runs in six innings. DaVanon, 26, missed the entire season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on March 17.

Anaheim also announced that infielder Keith Johnson, outfielder Chris Hatcher, catcher Bret Hemphill and righthander Eric Weaver were all eligible for free agency after not being added back to the roster by the end of the regular season.
