AMERICAN LEAGUE

Twins vs. Tigers
Minnesota: 2B Jay Canizaro is likely done for the season. He suffered a concussion when he was accidentally hit in the head by a pitch during batting practice Thursday at Cleveland. ... 2B Denny Hocking, 3-for-17 on the Twins' season-ending road trip, was not in the lineup Saturday at Detroit. Hocking was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and stranded five runners in Friday's 1-0 loss to the Tigers. Detroit: RHP Brian Moehler, who won the first game played in Comerica Park on April 11, will start Sunday's season finale, as well. Moehler was also the winning pitcher in the last game played at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 27, 1999. ... RHP Todd Jones picked up his 42nd save Friday, a night after he was hit in the calf by a Joe Randa line drive as Jones was losing 8-5 at Kansas City. "It got me pretty good but I think I should be OK," Jones said. "Getting hit is not something I worry about because it doesn't happen often. Actually, I don't even wear a cup." Jones earned the victory on Saturday.

Blue Jays vs. Indians
Toronto: 1B Carlos Delgado needs one extra-base hit on Sunday to become the 12th player in history to get 100 extra-base hits in a season. Albert Belle was the last AL player to do it, getting 103 in 1995 with the Indians. Colorado's Todd Helton accomplished the feat earlier this year. ... Manager Jim Fregosi was still steaming after the game about Roberto Alomar's controversial home run in the seventh inning of Cleveland's 6-5 win. Alomar's shot appeared to wrap around the foul pole in left, but that's not the way Fregosi saw it. "Look at where the ball was caught by the fans and there is no way it could curve around the pole to that point. If it was fair, it would have hit the pole." Fregosi was ejected by third-base umpire Mark Wegner for arguing. ... LHP David Wells could help his Cy Young candidacy with a win over the Indians on Sunday. Wells, 17-3 in his career against Cleveland, is 20-7 this year, but he trails Boston's Pedro Martinez in most other categories. Cleveland: During the playoff stretch run, the Indians have beaten both Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez, two pitchers who have dominated Cleveland during their careers. Now the Indians will have to beat David Wells, 17-3 lifetime against Cleveland, for any chance at making the postseason. "He's been tough on a lot of teams," said Roberto Alomar. "We've got to put pressure on him early and be aggressive." ... RF Manny Ramirez could be playing his final game for the Indians on Sunday. Ramirez, eligible for free agency after the season, missed 39 games with a hamstring injury. But since returning he's batting .369 with 24 homers and 74 RBI in 71 games. His homer on Saturday was his 10th in 22 games. ... LHP Chuck Finley went 10-3 with a 3.20 ERA at Jacobs Field this season. Finley came to Cleveland to pitch in big games, and with the Indians fighting to get in the playoffs, every game has been a big one. "If this team was ever ready for the postseason, it's this year."

Yankees vs. Orioles
New York: RHP Orlando Hernandez, the Yankees' starter Sunday, will be vying to go 4-0 lifetime at Camden Yards. ... Derek Jeter, bidding for his 200th hit, grounded out in the first inning Saturday. His nine-game hitting streak ended Friday. ... David Justice grounded out in the second inning, stretching his hitless streak to 13 at-bats. ... Cone yielded his 24th homer in 30 appearances, to Cal Ripken in the second inning. Baltimore: Mike Mussina, Baltimore's starter Saturday, retired the first six batters in what could be his final game as an Oriole. He becomes a free agent after the season. ... McElroy made 603 relief appearances before blanking Oakland for five innings as a starter and, as an encore, throwing six innings of three-hit ball Friday against New York.

Red Sox vs. Devil Rays
Boston: SS Nomar Garciaparra, who will become the first righthanded hitter to win consecutive batting titles since Joe DiMaggio in 1939-40, was given the day off. He's just worn down," manager Jimy Williams said. "This kid has given his heart and soul out there everyday." Williams has not decided if Garciaparra will play in Sunday's season finale. ... When asked about Garciaparra's hitting success, Williams used the word viper. "That's how quick his hands are," he said. ... 3B Lou Merloni was back in the starting lineup after sitting out Friday's game with a sore right knee. Tampa Bay: During an eight-day stretch that concluded after knocking Boston out of playoff contention in an 8-6 win Friday, the Devil Rays went 7-1 against AL East contenders. "What I like about it is, we've played solid baseball," manager Larry Rothschild said. "Still, you'd rather be on the other end trying to win them instead of playing the spoiler." ... DH Greg Vaughn returned to the starting lineup. It was his first game action since leaving the team Sept. 23 to tend to a family illness.

Royals vs. White Sox
Kansas City: The Royals are only the fifth team since 1990 to have two players with 200 or more hits in the same season. Johnny Damon and Mike Sweeney are the fourth and fifth players in team history to collect 200 hits in one season, joining Kevin Seitzer, Willie Wilson and George Brett. ... Damon's 126 hits since the All-Star break before Saturday were the most in the majors. ... Kansas City is just one of two AL teams with a winning record against the White Sox this season. The Red Sox are the other. Chicago: Carlton Fisk, who played the second half of his career with the White Sox but who wore a Red Sox hat into the Hall of Fame, was honored Saturday night. A video tribute to Fisk played on the scoreboard before the game and he threw out the ceremonial first pitch. His final season with Chicago in 1993 prompted a bitter parting following 13 years with the White Sox. Fisk was released at age 44 during that season and later refused admittance to the Chicago clubhouse to greet his former teammates before the playoffs that year. He did return to Comiskey in 1997 to have his number retired. Fisk threw his pitch to Harold Baines, who was also a member of the White Sox's 1983 playoff team. ... Frank Thomas led the voting for the White Sox's All-Century team that included Shoeless Joe Jackson, Luke Appling, Fisk and Nellie Fox. ... Olympic gold medalist Jon Rauch, a 6-foot-11 right-hander who was 16-4 in two White Sox minor league stops this season, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Sunday.

Angels vs. Mariners
Seattle: The 21-9 victory over the Angels on Sunday matched the 1997 Mariner's club record of 90 wins in a season. ... SS Alex Rodriguez's seven RBI against Anaheim in the rout gives him 131 for the season, seven more than his previous career high. With 40 homers this year, he also reached that plateau for the third consecutive year. ... A Lou Piniella-managed team has never failed to win a division title after holding the lead in September -- with his teams finishing on top at Cincinnati in 1990 and 1995 and with the Mariners in 1995 and 1997. ... Edgar Martinez's 145 RBI this year are the most ever by a player 37 or older, with Babe Ruth second with 137 in 1932. Anaheim: Darin Erstad's two hits against Seattle gave him 239 on the season, tying him for 14th on the major league's all-time single-season list with Rod Carew. ... Tim Salmon needs three RBI in the Angels' season finale to make Anaheim only the second team in history to have five players reach 100 RBI in a season. The 1936 New York Yankees had Lou Gehrig with 152, Joe DiMaggio with 125, Tony Lazzeri with 109, Bill Dickey with 107 and George Selkirk with 107. It was Castillo's fourth home run in 1,601 career at-bats and just his second this season. Castillo did not start Saturday's game after reaching a career-high of 100 runs in Friday night's game. Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Phillies open their 2001 Major League baseball campaign in the same place they will end the 2000 season. The Phillies will face the Florida Marlins on Monday, April 2 at Pro Player Stadium. ... The Phillies are assured of finishing at least tied for the worst record in the National League East. The Phillies will fail to best last year's 68-94 record.

Cubs vs. Pirates
Chicago: The Pirates presented Sammy Sosa an old banner with the No. 21 that used to fly over Three Rivers Stadium in memory of Roberto Clemente. Assistant media relations director Ben Bouma found the banner in a storage area and thought Sosa would like to have it. With Vidro's homer, the Expos have hit 89 home runs on the road, two short of the team record set in 1997.
