Canizaro day-to-day after BP mishap

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Jay Canizaro of the Minnesota Twins got a concussion when he was hit in the head by a pitch during batting practice before Thursday night's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Canizaro, who was not wearing a batting helmet, fell to the ground and was immediately surrounded by teammates. After about 10 minutes, the second baseman was helped to the clubhouse by two teammates, then taken to a hospital.

Canizaro returned to the team's clubhouse during the second inning. His condition was listed as day-to-day.

According to the Twins, Canizaro had just stepped into the batting cage and the practice pitcher apparently thought the young infielder was getting ready to bunt. Canizaro instead stepped across the plate just as the pitch was thrown.

Canizaro, 27, was hitting .269 with seven homers and 40 RBI in 346 at-bats. He signed as a free agent with Minnesota on April 4.

Canizaro was replaced in the leadoff spot in the batting order by Denny Hocking.
