Williams on M's move: I don't think so

ESPN.com news services

Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said he knew nothing of a reported agreement that had him going to Seattle after the season.

"I do? Huh," Williams was quoted as saying in Wednesday's Hartford Courant. "I don't think so. I don't know anything what you're talking about. I have an agreement with the Red Sox, a contract."

Williams was referring to a report in Tuesday's Globe and Mail of Toronto that said Mariners general manager Pat Gillick and Williams had an informal agreement in which Williams would manage in Seattle next season. The Globe and Mail of Toronto cited sources close to both men.

Williams, whose contract ends after next season, and Gillick worked together in Toronto.

A recent conflict between Williams and Red Sox GM Dan Duquette has fueled speculation about Williams' job status for next season in Boston.

During the weekend, Williams told reporters that Duquette should fire him since the GM refused to back him on his differences with outfielder Carl Everett. Williams was upset with Everett for showing up late to the park and because of the player's generally hostile attitude toward the coaching staff, his teammates and the media.

According to the Courant, Williams on Monday met with Duquette and chief executive officer John Harrington to discuss the Everett situation.

Williams declined to reveal details of Monday's meeting .

"In-house," Williams said. "That's all I can tell you. That's the way it stays. ... Just don't get mad at me when I keep saying, 'in-house,' please. If you want to, you can."

The Red Sox issued a statement on their Web site Tuesday concerning the meeting.

"As far the perception that the club condones the off-field concerns and the behaviors in question involving Carl Everett, the ball club does not condone these behaviors," the statement read.
