White Sox at Twins
Chicago: First, Cal Eldred throws five innings in the
instructional league with a screw in his elbow and might get a
start Wednesday. Now James Baldwin, bothred by tendinitis in his
shoulder, also hopes to rejoin the White Sox's rotation so he can
have a chance at pitching in the playoffs. Baldwin threw 65 pitches
on the side Sunday. The pain is still there but Baldwin was
encouraged that he can come back and pitch. Baldwin missed two
starts with a tired arm and then he returned, his shoulder began
hurting and he needed a cortisone injection. He hasn't pitched in
two weeks but his if start against Kansas City goes OK, he's
convinced he can pitch in the postseason. "The pain is something I
got to deal with. It's once in a lifetime and I want to contribute
to the team." ... .Ray Durham, who collapsed on the field Friday
night and is suffering from bruised ribs, sat out a second straight
game Sunday. ... The White Sox announced that tickets for Games 1
and 2 of the ALCS -- should they get that far -- were sold out Sunday
in 80 minutes.
Minnesota: Manager Tom Kelly and GM Terry Ryan entered the final
home game of the season Sunday not knowing what their futures might
hold. Both have contracts that expire after the season. Initially,
Kelly said he could call owner Carl Pohlad before the end of the
final homestand to find out what was going on. Now he says that
might not happen until near the end of the season. The Twins finish
the season with a seven-game road trip. Kelly is completing his
14th full season as Minnesota's manager and the Twins have had
eight straight losing seasons. ... The Twins finished their home
season 36-45, their best at the Metrodome since 1996. ... The home
finale drew just 9,716, bringing the final home attendance to
1,059,715.
Devil Rays at Blue Jays
Tampa Bay: LF Randy Winn (bruised forearm) and SS Felix Martinez
(bruised thigh), who collided going for Darrin Fletcher's
game-winning RBI double on Saturday, were both scratched. ... After
going 29 games without scoring five or more runs, the Devil Rays
have scored six in each of the last two games. ... 1B Fred McGriff
is one RBI short of his sixth 100-RBI season. ... Three of C John
Flaherty's last five hits have been homers. ... OF Jose Guillen
ended an 0-for-19 stretch with a third-inning single.
Toronto: C Darrin Fletcher is 8-for-12 in the first three games
of the series. ... RHP Steve Trachsel has gone seven innings or
more in four of his last five starts. ... The Blue Jays matched a
season low with two hits, done previously Sept. 4 against Oakland.
... Dave Martinez started in right field for Toronto, replacing
Raul Mondesi, who started his first game Saturday since undergoing
elbow surgery Aug. 14.
Orioles at Red Sox
Baltimore: Mike Mussina tied his career high with 15 strikeouts.
He also fanned 15 on Aug. 1 in Minnesota, and in Game 3 of the 1997
AL championship series. During the regular season, he has 26 games
with 10 or more strikeouts.
Boston: Reliever Hipolito Pichardo has allowed 12 earned runs in
his last 12 appearance (13.2 IP _ 7.90 ERA). ...Lefty Jeff Fassero
is 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA in 11 2-3 innings since being moved to the
bullpen. .. Midre Cummings struck out in a pinch hitting appearance
Sunday after hitting a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning against
Baltimore Saturday. Cummings leads the league with 15 pinch hits in
45 at bats (.333).
Indians at Royals
Cleveland: When Bartolo Colon reached the 200-strikeout mark
(202) in Saturday's game, he became the first Indians pitcher to do
so in 24 years. Dennis Eckersley struck out 200 in 1976. ... The
Indians finished the season with a 42-39 mark on the road. ... The
Indians finished the season series with the Royals with a 5-7
record. It's the first time in six years that the Indians have not
won the season series between the two teams.
Kansas City:Kris Wilson, who was removed from Saturday's game
after being hit on the heel by a line drive off the bat of David
Segui, was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays. The X-rays
were negative and Wilson was available Sunday. ... Johnny Damon
leads the league with 131 runs scored, two behind Hal McRae for the
Royals' team record.
Angels at Rangers
Anaheim: Sunday's game at Texas marked the ninth game of a
13-game (15-day) road trip for the Angels, their longest of the
season. ... The Angels don't return to Edison Field until Friday,
when they close out the year in a weekend series with Seattle.
Texas: The bat Rafael Palmeiro used to hit his 400th career home
run Saturday will be sent to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Tigers at Yankees
Detroit: Deivi Cruz recorded his 52nd multihit game of the
season, most for the Tigers since Alan Trammell's 64 in 1987. ...
At 7-4, the Tigers have won a season series against the Yankees for
the first time since 1991. ... Brad Ausmus is becoming dangerous
for Yankees pitchers. On Saturday, his hard grounder struck RHP
Roger Clemens in the right leg, leaving the New York ace
questionable for his next start. On Sunday, Ausmus hit a liner that
LHP Andy Pettitte caught at his hip.
New York: LHP Andy Pettitte has won 10 of his last 12 decisions.
... RHP Dwight Gooden will start in David Cone's place Monday
against Detroit, then return to the bullpen for the playoffs. ...
Derek Jeter is 10-for-14 and has scored six runs in the first three
games of this series. ... Andy Pettitte has not given up a home run
in his last seven games, a span of 48 1-3 innings. ... OF Paul
O'Neill is 1-for-13 since missing six games because of a hip
pointer.
Athletics at Mariners
Oakland:Giambi's homer was the
Oakland's 5,000th in 32 years since moving from Kansas City. He
also hit the No. 4,000 on May 17, 1996. ... The A's went 9-4 against the
Mariners, including 5-2 at Safeco Field. Seattle: Seattle has won six straight one-run games. ... Miguel
Tejada hit cleanup for the second time his season. He hit fourth
Thursday night. ... Halama picked off Piatt at first to end the
fourth, his ninth pickoff of the season. ... Mariners 2B Mark
McLemore turned in the defensive play of the game when he made a
diving stop of Terrence Long's grounder in the fifth and threw him
out. ... The fourth sellout of the series pushed Seattle's
attendance to more than 3 million (3,037,753) for the second time.
The Mariners drew 3,192,237 in 1997. Sasaki's 35 saves are
one shy of the major league record for a rookie set by Todd Worrell
for St. Louis in 1986.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pirates at Brewers
Pittsburgh:OF Adam Hyzdu is batting .429 (6-for-14) is his
eight games since making his major league debut Sept. 8. ...
Although leading in each of their 11 games of their final road trip
of the season, the Pirates went (4-7). The lost 6-5 to the
Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday to finish the season with a 32-49 road
record. ... The Pirates, off Monday, close with a six-game
homestand _ three games each against the Astros and Cubs. ...
Pittsburgh leads the NL in doubles with 308, which is 12 shy of the
team record.
Milwaukee: Jeff D'Amico, who allowed a career-high 12 hits in a
4-2 loss to the Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader, makes
his final home start Thursday in the final game at County Stadium.
"Hopefully, I'll go out and have another good outing in front of
50,000 people," he said. "It'll be special and I'm sure I'll
remember it for the rest of my life." ... The Brewers need to win
the three-game series with the Reds to finish above .500 at home
for the first time since 1997. ... C Henry Blanco, making his first
start since Sept. 6, homered in the second inning Sunday. He also
threw out Warren Morris trying to steal in the second inning. He's
thrown out 16 of his last 23 (69 percent). ... Jeromy Burnitz hit
his 29th home run Sunday, a three-run shot in the ninth to beat
Pittsburgh 6-5. Burnitz has 94 RBI and is trying to reach 100 for
the third straight season
Cardinals at Cubs
St. Louis: RHP Garrett Stephenson, who missed his turn Saturday
because of arm fatigue, will start Friday and is penciled in as the
Game 2 starter for the NL division series. RHP Darryl Kile will
start Game 1. ... 1B Will Clark has 10 home runs and 35 RBI in 45
games with St. Louis. He totaled nine homers and 28 RBI in 79 games
with Baltimore. ... Equipment manager Buddy Bates was dressed in a
Michigan cheerleader uniform and a Wolverine helmet Sunday after
losing a bet with C Mike Matheny over the outcome of the
Michigan-Illinois football game. Matheny was co-captain of the
Michigan baseball team.
Chicago: RF Sammy Sosa missed his fifth straight game because of
a muscle strain in his lower back. Sosa, who hasn't swung a bat
since Sept. 18 in Milwaukee, will get in the batting cage before
Monday's game to see if he's OK. ... RHP Rick Aguilera, sidelined
with a broken right thumb, will return home Monday. He still has to
wear a splint on his thumb for two weeks and then he'll begin his
rehab. "I'm going to start thumb wrestling," Aguilera said. ...
1B Mark Grace will go to the playoffs this season -- as a color
commentator for ESPN Radio.
Mets at Phillies
New York:The Mets will finish the regular season with
three-game sets against Atlanta and Montreal. The team is 50-25 at
Shea Stadium. ... CF Jay Payton's 16 home runs are the most for a
Mets' rookie since Darryl Strawberry hit 26 in 1983. ... Tuesday's
starter Al Leiter is 6-6 against Atlanta lifetime.
Philadelphia: RHP Kent Bottenfield will miss the remainder of
the season with a strained left ankle. The right-hander tried to
pitch a simulated game on Friday but left the mound after just
three pitches. Cliff Politte is expected to take his turn in the
rotation on Thursday in Chicago. ... The Phillies have used 51
players this season, three short of the club record. ... 3B Scott
Rolen has hit 53 career home runs at Veterans Stadium, which ranks
fifth on the Phillies all-time list. Darren Daulton is fourth with
67. ... Rob Ducey set a Phillies record and leads the NL this
season with 65th pinch-hit at-bats. The old mark (62) was held by
Curt Ford in 1989. ... Monday's starter Robert Person (9-5) ranks
among the NL leaders in ERA (3.36), strikeouts per 9 IP (8.7) and
opponents average (.219).
Braves at Expos
Atlanta: The Braves, seeking their ninth straight division
title, set season highs for runs and hits, beating Montreal 14-5 to
maintain a 3{-game lead over the second-place Mets. ... Javier
Lopez, Chipper Jones, Keith Lockhart and Reggie Sanders each had
three hits as the Braves rapped out 21 hits off six Montreal
pitchers. ... Andy Ashby won his fourth straight start to raise his
record to 8-5 since he was acquired from Philadelphia on July 12.
... The Braves beat Houston 13-5 on July 29. Atlanta had 17 hits
twice this season, most recently on July 2 at the Mets.
Montreal:Vladimir Guerrero, who was 10-for-15 -- including one
homer and three RBIs -- against Ashby entering the game, went
0-for-4 to drop his team-leading average to .348. ... Jose Vidro
hit his 49th double, leaving him five short of the Expos' record
set by Mark Grudzielanek in 1997. ... The Expos are assured of
falling short of 1 million fans at home for the third straight
season, and sixth time in the franchise's 32-year history. The game
drew 11,350, raising Montreal's home attendance to 919,332 with one
game remaining at Olympic Stadium.
Astros at Reds
Houston: The Astros have an off-day Monday before starting their
final three-game road series in Pittsburgh. ... Despite losing the
weekend series to the Reds, Houston has won 10 of its past 13
series.
Cincinnati: Sunday's game was the season finale in Cinergy
Field, with demolition of left and center field stands set to begin
Monday so construction can start on a ballfield scheduled to be
ready for the 2003 season. The Reds will play two more years in
Cinergy Field, which will have about 42,500 seats after 14,000 are
removed. ... Four statues of Crosley Field-era players will be
placed at the entrance to the new ballpark. Based on fan voting,
the four players chosen are catcher Ernie Lombardi, outfielder
Frank Robinson, first baseman Ted Kluszewski and pitcher Joe
Nuxhall.
Marlins at Rockies
Florida: Cliff Floyd and Mark Kotsay sat out the game with
flulike symptoms. ... Marlins OF Preston Wilson struck out three
times and is four away from tying Bobby Bonds' single-season record
of 189 in 1970. ... Wilson is also 14-for-49 with six homers and 11
RBIs in his last 12 games. ... The Marlins won the season series
5-4. ... Derrek Lee is 10-for-46 in his last 13 games after a
1-for-3 game with a triple. ... Florida was 5-8 on the road trip,
the longest in franchise history.
Colorado: The ground crew began work of the field at 8 a.m. to
clear the field of an overnight snowfall that left a two inches of
snow. ... A strained left oblique muscle has ended RHP Pedro
Astacio's season. Astacio, 12-9 with a 5.27 ERA in 32 starts,
sustained the injury running out a ground ball in a Sept. 16 start
at Los Angeles. ... Juan Pierre, who was 0-for-1, matched Kent
Hrbeck of Minnesota in 1982 as the only two to have had two hitting
streaks of 15 games or longer their rookie seasons. ... OF Jeffrey
Hammonds played catch for about 10 minutes but missed his
fifth-straight game with a sore right shoulder. ... Todd Helton's
steal of home in the third inning was the second of the year for
Colorado and 12th in club history. ... Helton has 99 extra base
hits, tying Larry Walker (1997) for the franchise record. ... Terry
Shumpert's triple was the team's 53rd of the season, six shy of the
club record of 59 set in 1993.
Padres at Dodgers
San Diego: The Padres completed their road schedule Sunday with
a 35-46 record, seven victories better than last season. ... Matt
Clement walked three batters on Sunday, raising his season total to
121 and putting him within one of the club record of 122 set by
Steve Arlin in 1972. Clement already has set franchise marks this
season with 23 wild pitches and 15 hit batsmen. His 1-0 loss to the
Dodgers made him the first Padres pitcher to lose 16 games in a
season since the late Eric Show in 1987. ... The Padres' streak of
consecutive stolen bases reached 27 when Mike Darr beat Chad
Kreuter's throw to second in the first inning. ... Eric Owens' next
steal will make him the fourth player in the Padres' 32-year
history to steal at least 30 bases in consecutive seasons.
Los Angeles: Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, winding down
his 51st season with the Dodgers, was honored Sunday a pregame
ceremony for his selection by the American Sportscasters
Association as "Sportscaster of the Century." Scully, 72, got his
start at Ebbets Field alongside the legendary Red Barber, whose
greatest impact on Scully was his preparation for games. "Probably
the best thing he ever did for me was that he cared. He wanted me
to succeed. I wasn't just another announcer in the booth," Scully
recalled. "And because he looked upon me almost as a son, his
demands were high. He was relentless, to make sure I would get to
whatever height he would set the bar at."
Diamondbacks at Giants
Arizona: Fatherhood agrees with outfielder Danny Bautista, who
has eight hits in 16 at bats since the birth of his son on
Wednesday. ... The Diamondbacks are 1-59 when trailing after eight
innings. ... LHP Dan Plesac is currently tied with Jeff Reardon for
15th on the all-time appearances list by a pitcher, each with 880.
... Since Aug. 3, when the Diamondbacks and Giants were tied for
the division lead, Arizona has gone 21-24. ... The Diamondbacks are
one of just two opposing NL teams with a winning record at Pac Bell
Park, carrying a 4-2 mark into Sunday's action. The Dodgers also
went 4-2. ... OF Luis Gonzalez is the only player to hit a ball
into McCovey Cove, the body of water beyond right field at Pac Bell

San Francisco: SS Rich Aurilia needs one more home run to become
the first Giants' shortstop to have multiple 20-homer seasons since
Alvin Dark in 1953-54, and would team with 2B Jeff Kent to become
the first ever middle infield combination in major league history
to both hit 20 or more homers in the same season in consecutive
years. ... The Giants did not lose more than two games in
succession at home since starting the season 0-6 in their new
ballpark. ... The Giants need six more home runs to surpass the
franchise record of 221 in 1947. ... With 55 home victories
entering play Sunday, only the 1962 Giants won more games at home
(61) in San Francisco. ... The Giants, who finish the regular
season with six games on the road, have won 13 of their last 17
games away from Pac Bell Park and have not had a losing road trip
since June 2-7 at Oakland and Anaheim.
