AMERICAN LEAGUE

Red Sox vs. Yankees
Boston: This was the first time since July 8-9, 1959, that Boston and New York have played at Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium on consecutive days. Monday night's game was a makeup of a rainout June 12. ... Boston, outhomered by New York 14-0 in seven meetings at Fenway Park this season, wasted no time in going deep Monday night. After Trot Nixon drew a walk from Orlando Hernandez leading off the game, Jose Offerman homered. Manny Alexander hit a two-run homer in the second inning. New York: Monday night's matchup of Rolando Arrojo and Orlando Hernandez marked the second meeting of Cuban defectors in the majors this season. On April 26, Vladimir Nunez of Florida opposed Livan Hernandez of San Francisco. ... LHP Randy Keisler, who won his major league debut at Boston on Sunday, put on the pinstripes for the first time. The Texas native grew up with a poster of Roger Clemens in his room, and was thrilled to find his locker was right next to the Rocket's. "It's pretty cool," Keisler said.

Tigers vs. White Sox
Detroit: SS Deivi Cruz has 44 doubles, tied for second in the AL and the most by a Tigers player since George Kell hit 56 in 1950. Cruz has hit 14 doubles in his last 25 games, including two on Sunday. ... The Tigers have scored just 11 runs in 45 innings over their last five games, all losses. The team is batting .179 with runners in scoring position in those games. "Our offense has gone totally south," manager Phil Garner said. "We go into a slump as a unit." ... The Tigers entered Monday's game 7½ games back in the AL wild card race. "I can't throw in the towel yet," Garner said. Chicago: LF Carlos Lee was selected co-AL player of the week with Oakland's Barry Zito. Lee batted .583 with two homers and two RBI in six games. He is the fourth Chicago player to receive the weekly honor. ... 3B Joe Crede, MVP of the Southern League, was called up from Double-A Birmingham. ... The White Sox gave broadcaster Ken Harrelson an eight-year contract through 2008. ... RHP James Baldwin, who received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder last weekend, was still sore Monday. If all goes well, he'll throw Wednesday or Friday on the side.

Royals vs. Mariners
Kansas City: Johnny Damon, began Monday hitting .418 since the All-Star break with 104 hits and 57 runs. His 104 hits were 23 more than any other player. ... The Royals had the most hits of any AL team (1,447) and were third in batting (.287). They struck out the fewest times of any team in the majors (744). Seattle: Since Jay Buhner returned to action Sept. 2, the Mariners are 6-3, including 5-1 in the six games Buhner has started. In 12 games when Buhner was on the DL with a sprained right pinky finger and a strained right wrist, the team was 4-8. The Mariners are 49-39 in games when Buhner starts in RF. ... Rickey Henderson is fourth on the career list with 2,173 runs scored. Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron each scored 2,174 runs and Ty Cobb is first with 2,246.

Devil Rays vs. Athletics
Tampa Bay: RHP Ryan Rupe, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a blood clot in his right shoulder Monday, said he was relieved to finally know it was a physical problem that led to a poor season (5-6, 6.92 ERA) for him. "I kept fighting out there, but sometimes your body just doesn't have it," Rupe said. "I kept thinking it was me, but I wasn't 100 percent. It's good they found something and there was a reason I wasn't feeling 100 percent. I'm kind of glad." Doctors have assured Rupe he should have no further circulatory problems. ... OF Randy Winn, OF Ozzie Timmons and C Toby Hall were recalled from Durham of the International League. Winn appeared in 32 games with the Devil Rays earlier this season. Timmons has been with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati and Seattle. Hall will be making his major league debut. ... LHP Mike Duvall was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. ... He expects to miss only a couple of days. ... 1B Fred McGriff is just six for his last 44 and hasn't driven in a run in 12 games. Oakland: Speed and pitching were the theme of Monday's September callups for the A's, who brought seven players up from their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento. Outfielders Eric Byrnes and Bo Porter, and infielders Mark Bellhorn and Jose Ortiz each stole at least 20 bases this season. Brynes, who appeared in two games with Oakland earlier this year, has 34, while Porter, who was with the Chicago Cubs for 24 games last season, has 39. Bellhorn, who appeared in 68 games with the A's in 1997 and 11 in 1998, swiped 20. Ortiz, the PCL MVP this season, had 22 stolen bases to go with 24 homers and 108 RBI. "It's more of a reward for having the season they had," A's manager Art Howe said, "But we certainly have speed off the bench now." Right-handed pitchers Ariel Prieto, Jon Ratliff and Scott Service also joined the team, and all three have major league service.

Orioles vs. Angels
Baltimore: RHP Mike Mussina leads the AL in innings pitched with 219 2/3 and also is in the top five in ERA (3.85), complete games (six), and strikeouts (186). But his record is a career-worst 9-14 because the Orioles have scored just 3.61 runs per nine innings -- lowest in the league -- when he's pitching. Mussina scattered five hits over eight innings on Sunday, but was the loser in a 2-1 defeat by Anaheim. ... The Orioles' road record, 26-48 heading into Monday night's game at Anaheim, is the AL's worst. Baltimore is 38-30 at Camden Yards. Anaheim: RHP Al Levine, a reliever pressed into starting duty when Matt Wise came up with a sore elbow on Sunday, will get another start Friday, against Minnesota. Levine, who pitched four scoreless innings in the Angels' 2-1 victory over Baltimore, this time will replace the struggling Scott Karl in the rotation. "It's a 'Catch-22' situation; Scott needs to pitch to get better, but we can't afford that luxury right now," Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. "We know Scott's a much better pitcher than he's shown and he can still be a big help to us down the stretch." ... Heading into Monday night's game against the Orioles, the Angels had an AL-high 43 home victories this year. But their road record is 29-39 and 13 of their final 19 games are on the road.

Philadelphia: The Phillies called up C Clemente Alvarez from Double-A Reading. The team had an opening at catcher with Mike Lieberthal out for the season due to arthoscopic surgery on his right elbow and Gary Bennett leaving the team after Monday's doubleheader to be with his wife, who is expecting the couple's first child. Alvarez is making his major league debut after spending 12 of the last 14 years in the minors. He was out of baseball in 1996 and 1998. ... Cardinals vs. Pirates
St. Louis: Jim Edmonds was back in the lineup Monday one day after a freak accident in the visitors clubhouse at Milwaukee's County Stadium.. Edmonds got his finger caught in a folding chair as he sat down to watch football on television. Edmonds said he feared he'd broken the finger -- or worse. "I can't believe I didn't cut my finger off," he said. Teammate Shawon Dunston helped free Edmonds' hand from the chair. ... The Cardinals are cruising to the NL Central title. They started play with a nine-game lead and of their remaining 19 games, only three are against a team with a winning record, the second-place Reds. Pittsburgh: The Pirates' clubhouse is so crowded with extra players that two sets of temporary lockers have been set up in the middle of the room. Sammy Sosa homered in the fourth, his 49th, and needs just one to become only the third player with more than two 50-homer seasons. The others are Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire. Cincinnati: Barry Larkin returned to the Reds locker room Monday night, even though he probably won't play again this season. Larkin had arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove cartilage fragments from his left knee. He started rehab Saturday but likely won't return except in the unlikely event that the Reds make the playoffs. ... Monday was the 15th anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192 hit. Rose singled to left field off San Diego's Eric Show to move past Ty Cobb into first place on baseball's career hit list. The spot where the ball landed was marked with paint until the Cincinnati Bengals -- who then shared Riverfront Stadium -- protested and the mark was removed.

To make room for him on the roster, Mike Riley, who has tendinitis of the left shoulder and biceps, was placed on the 60-day DL. Houston: Roger Cedeno, still feeling the affects of the flu, was held out of the lineup after leaving early in Sunday's game. He is available for pinch-hitting duty. Lance Berkman played in his place. Mitch Meluskey and Bill Spiers also have been slowed by the bug this week. ... The Astros have won eight of their last nine series and 11 series overall since the All-Star break. The team is 33-23 over that period.
