Yankees vs. Red Sox
New York: Randy Keisler is in good company after winning his
major league debut with five innings of one-run ball. The last
Yankees starter to win his debut at Fenway Park was Ralph Terry on
Aug. 5, 1956. The last Yankees to win his debut as a starter was
Orlando Hernandez on June 3, 1998. ... Scott Brosius is hitting
.239 but homered in consecutive games. "He goes in streaks like
this," Yankee manager Joe Torre said. ... Jose Canseco had an
impressive series against his former team, going 5-for-11 with a
double, a homer and three RBI. ... Clay Bellinger was hitless in
his last 13 at bats as a replacement for center fielder Bernie
Williams, who returned to the lineup after sitting out five games
with a strained right rib cage. Bellinger had one at bat Sunday and
struck out. Boston: The Red Sox had two runners caught stealing in a game
they couldn't afford to lose any. They had seven hits but didn't
get two in any inning. Darren Lewis was thrown out at third after
he and Jose Offerman began the first with walks. Scott Hatteberg
was nabbed at second in the fifth on a botched hit-and-run play
with Donnie Sadler at the plate. ... The Red Sox obtained RHP
Hector Carrasco from Minnesota for Class-A outfielder Lew Ford to
bolster a bullpen that has three players sidelined: Bryce Florie,
Rich Garces and Hipolito Pichardo. ... Nomar Garciaparra, 10-for-43
in his previous 10 games, went 3-for-3 with a single, double and
triple. ... Jeff Fassero, bounced from the rotation to make room
for Pete Schourek, relieved Schourek trailing 3-1 in the fifth and
pitched two perfect innings.
White Sox vs. Indians
Chicago: The White Sox return home to play Detroit Monday in the
second meeting between the teams since an ugly April brawl that
resulted in numerous suspensions. "I'm sure it's not completely
forgotten about. I don't think our primary concern is how many
fights we can get into with the Tigers," pitcher Mike Sirotka
said. "Our priorities are much higher than a brawl." The Sox
played a series in Detroit one week after the brawl without
incident. "It's 100 games ago," said manager Jerry Manuel. "I
think what has happened and with the way things have been handled
and the way Frank Robinson came down on people, it doesn't mean
they're not going to pitch inside or we're not going to pitch
inside." ... The White Sox will use Sirotka, Kip Wells and Jim
Parque against Detroit, skipping spot starter Sean Lowe. ... Manuel
said he's not counting on having James Baldwin, who got a cortisone
injection Saturday for tendinitis in his right shoulder. "If he
resurfaces, it's a bonus for us," Manuel said. Cleveland: OF Wil Cordero's greeted teammates with left-handed
handshakes a day after his right hand was broken by a pitch from
Chicago's Kevin Beirne. Indians manager Charlie Manuel was told by
doctors that Cordero, acquired just before the trading deadline,
would be out at least two weeks. But Manuel has his doubts. "He
might be able to hit, but he's going to have some pain," Manuel
said. "It's his throwing hand, so I'm not real confident. I'll
have to hear him tell me he can go without pain." ... After
Sunday's series finale against the first-place White Sox was
postponed by rain, the Indians began thinking about facing Boston.
"It will be another big series," said starter Jason Bere. "But
right now they're all big but this one's against a team that's
right behind us in the wild card." ... RHP Charles Nagy threw in
the bullpen on Sunday and will start Thursday against the Red Sox.
Nagy hasn't pitched since undergoing elbow surgery in May.
Tigers vs. Blue Jays
Detroit: OF Rich Becker has reached base in six consecutive
plate appearances dating to a pinch-hit single on Saturday. Becker
went 2-for-2 with three walks. ... Deivi Cruz has 14 doubles in his
last 25 games. ... The Tigers are 49-54 against righties. ... Steve
Sparks has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his
last eight starts. Toronto: The Blue Jays have won five straight against the
Tigers. Toronto finished the season series 9-3 against Detroit. ...
Toronto has 40 come-from-behind wins this season ... Chris
Carpenter had his second straight quality start. ... Brad Fullmer
has homered in three straight games for the first time in his
career. He's the sixth Toronto player to do it this season. ...
Kelvim Escobar picked up his first save since Sept. 25, 1997.
Rangers vs. Royals
Texas: Darren Oliver (2-7) lost his career-high fourth straight
decision. Oliver, winless in seven starts since beating Detroit on
May 31, has allowed 34 earned runs in his last 31 innings, a 9.87
ERA. Kansas City: Every Royals starter scored at least once. ... Joe
Randa also had five RBI last July 25 against Oakland. ... Johnny
Damon, who was 7-for-10 the first two games, went hitless in three
at-bats but scored his league-leading 122nd run.
Twins vs. Mariners
Minnesota: The Twins acquired OF Lew Ford from Boston in a trade
for reliever Hector Carrasco early Sunday. The 24-year-old Ford
batted .315 with 122 runs, 35 doubles, 11 triples, nine homers and
74 RBI with Class-A Augusta. The speedy Ford, who was Boston's
12th-round pick in the 1999 draft, was 52-for-56 in stolen base
attempts. ... CF Torii Hunter wasn't in the starting lineup Sunday
after injuring his groin when he made a leaping grab to rob
Seattle's Dan Wilson of a home run in the second inning Saturday.
Hunter is 10-for-24 in his last six games. Seattle: When Jay Buhner walked in the second inning, Seattle
set a club record with 671 walks eclipsing the mark set in 1996.
... For the first time since Safeco Field opened on July 15, 1999,
the retractable roof was closed for three consecutive games because
of rain or the threat of rain. The roof was shut Sunday for the
12th time in 71 home games this season.
Orioles vs. Angels
Baltimore: The current 13-game trip is the Orioles' longest in
four years, since another 13-game trip in 1996. ... SS Melvin Mora
returned to the starting lineup Sunday after missing seven games
with a strained left hamstring. ... Cal Ripken's next hit will be
career No. 3,053 to tie Rod Carew for 19th on the all-time list. Anaheim: A split of their last two games against Baltimore will
clinch the Angels' first season-series win over the Orioles since
1988, when they won 7 of 12. ... Al Levine's start Sunday was only
his third in 169 major-league appearances. ... Though Troy Percival
is sharing closing duties with Shigetoshi Hasegawa, he did finish
his 40th game of the season Friday night, automatically triggering
his 2001 option at $3.4 million.
Devil Rays vs. Athletics
Tampa Bay: After losing to Barry Zito, Tampa Bay dropped to
31-72 (.301) against lefties in its history. ... When Tampa Bay
pitchers gave up six home runs in Saturday's game against Oakland,
it matched the total they had allowed in the previous 10 games. Oakland: The A's have five players with 20 or more home runs for
the third time since the franchise moved to Oakland in 1968 -- Jason
Giambi, Ben Grieve, Miguel Tejada, Matt Stairs and Eric Chavez. The
A's also accomplished this in 1996 and 1999. ... All four AL West
teams are under .500 since the All-Star break. Oakland's 27-28 mark
was the best. ... There's been little in-between for Monday's
scheduled starting pitcher, Kevin Appier. He has a 2.99 ERA in his
12 victories and a 7.38 ERA in his 11 losses. ... Reliever Mike
Magnante has inherited 16 runners in his last 18 appearances and
has not allowed any to score.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Reds vs. Pirates
Cincinnati: Danny Graves picked up his 27th save, matching the
total he had last year. "That tells me I'm getting a little better
every year, which is what I want to do," he said. ... Reds
starters have gotten better even as the team has faded. Starting
pitchers have worked at least six innings in 41 of 56 games since
the All-Star break and have a record of 25-15. Pittsburgh: With their 81st loss on Sunday, the Pirates are
assured of their eighth consecutive non-winning season. They
haven't had a record over .500 since they won the 1992 NL East
title with a 96-66 mark. Since their last winning season, the major
leagues have added four franchises and one of those teams -- Florida
-- has won a World Series. Pittsburgh had nine consecutive
non-winning seasons from 1949-57. ... Brian Giles drew his 99th
walk on Sunday. The last Pirates player to top 100 was Barry Bonds,
who set the team record with 127 in 1992.
Diamondbacks vs. Marlins
Arizona: LHP Randy Johnson has four no-decisions in his last
nine starts. He struck out a season-high 14 Sunday, including his
300th of the season and the 3,000th of his career, but he left with
the game tied at 3 after the seventh inning. ... Armando Reynoso,
who will start Monday against Los Angeles, is looking to snap a
three-game losing streak. Florida: The three runs the Marlins scored off Randy Johnson in
the fifth inning Sunday were one more than they scored in their
previous 24 innings. ... OF Henry Rodriguez, suffering from
tightness in his left hamstring, pinch-hit in the eighth inning
Sunday. He struck out. ... Including Sunday's 1 hour, 7 minute
delay, the Marlins have had eight rain delays at home this season,
stopping play for 11 hours and 27 minutes.
Phillies vs. Mets
Philadelphia: Despite Sunday's loss, the Phillies are still 6-3
against the Mets this season. They play four more times later this
month at Veterans Stadium. ... 1B Travis Lee went 0-for-4, leaving
him in a 2-for-30 slump. ... 3B Scott Rolen flipped his bat and
headed toward first base after taking a 3-2 pitch in the sixth,
only to find out umpire Bill Miller had called it strike three. New York: Mets starters have an 0.91 ERA in the last four games
at Shea Stadium. Al Leiter, Glendon Rusch, Mike Hampton and Rick
Reed have allowed just three runs and 19 hits in 29 2/3 innings.
... The crowd of 53,775 was the Mets' sixth sellout at home. ...
The Mets are 20-8 when Leiter starts. He won 3-0 Sunday in his
second outing since being forced to leave a start against Houston
with a strained muscle in his right buttock.
Expos vs. Braves
Montreal: 2B Jose Vidro sat out his fourth straight game after
an MRI Friday of his left elbow revealed a partial tear of the
ulnar collateral ligament. ... Vladimir Guerrero drew an
intentional walk in Montreal's 7-5, 12-inning win Saturday night,
giving him a major league best 20 on the season. Atlanta: The Braves lost five of seven at home against Montreal.
It was the first time they've dropped the home season series to the
Expos since 1992 when they were 1-5. ... OF Brian Jordan, who left
Saturday night's game with a bruised right foot from a foul ball,
was not in Sunday's starting lineup. He's listed as day to day.
Dodgers vs. Rockies
Los Angeles: The home run by Todd Hundley gave the Dodgers 193
for the season and within reach of the franchise record of 208 set
in Brooklyn in 1953. ... Matt Herges worked four scoreless innings
for his first major league save. ... Los Angeles is 17-11 in Darren
Dreifort's starts. ... Manager Davey Johnson had no concern about
Chan Ho Park's ineffective outing on Saturday when he was roughed
up for seven runs in five innings. "Everybody has a bad outing at
Coors Field," Johnson said. "He wasn't comfortable with his curve
ball, but who isn't in this ballpark. ... The Dodgers were
errorless after committing four errors in the first two games of
the series. ... Eric Karros is 10-for-55 in his past 14 games. ...
Los Angeles avoided a season-high six-game losing streak. ... Tom
Goodwin has an 11-game hitting and is 15-for-44 over that stretch. Colorado: Buddy Bell's fifth inning ejection for arguing a play
at the plate was his eighth this season. "There had been no
dialogue between us (home plate umpire Ian Lamplugh) for a long
time," Bell said. "I hadn't said much." ... By earning his 10th
victory on Saturday, LHP Gabe White (10-2) set an individual
franchise record for wins in a season by a reliever. Steve Reed won
nine games in 1993. ... The Rockies bullpen tied a franchise record
on Saturday when it posted its 33rd win, The 1996 bullpen was
33-27. ... OF Juan Pierre has hit safely in 23 of 26 games since
being called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs. ... RHP Pete Walker
made his first major league appearance since Sept. 7, 1996 when he
was a member of San Diego.
Padres vs. Giants
San Diego: 3B Dave Magadan is 5-for-9 with three runs scored and
two RBI since taking over for the injured Phil Nevin. "I know
he's not the prototype clean-up hitter, but he's probably not going
to strike out," said Padres' manager Bruce Bochy. "He's going to
make you throw strikes and he's a tough out." ... SS Desi Relaford
is 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts this season. ... San Diego's
scheduled off day on Thursday will be its first since Aug. 24. San Francisco: Despite their first-place standing in the NL
West, the Giants are 18-18 against division foes. "We weren't
playing good early, and I always said I thought our division was
the toughest," Giants manager Dusty Baker said. "Every team is at
.500 or better except the Padres, and they're close. We're not
disregarding anybody." ... OF Armando Rios is expected to join the
team in Houston on Monday after flying to Puerto Rico on Friday
following the death of his grandmother. ... C Scott Servais got his
first start with the Giants on Sunday. "You have to use him in
case something happens to the other catchers," said Baker. "He
knows Woody (Kirt Rueter) pretty good too."
Astros vs. Cubs
Houston: The Astros have won eight of their last nine series.
... According to the Society of American Baseball Research, Houston
has established a major league record by hitting six or more home
runs in a game five times this season. The 1977 Red Sox logged four
six-homer games in a single season. ... The Astros also set club
record Saturday with 11 extra-base hits and 44 total bases. In the
three-game series, Houston totaled 49 hits and 12 homers. ... RHP
Jose Lima will start Monday against the Giants. He is 6-2 with four
no decisions in his last 12 starts. Chicago: RHP Kyle Farnsworth will take over closer duties now
that RHP Rick Aguilera is done for the season. Farnsworth was
successful in nine of 10 save opportunities at Triple-A Iowa. "He
has the stuff to do it," manager Don Baylor said. ... RHP Kevin
Tapani will miss the road trip to Cincinnati and have his right
knee examined this week in Chicago. Tapani also is bothered by a
sore left Achilles and his back. "One (injury) kind of led to the
next," he said. ... RHP Jamie Arnold is a candidate to take
Tapani's spot in the rotation Wednesday. ... Julio Zuleta started
in LF, Augie Ojeda at SS and Jose Nieves at 3B Sunday as Baylor
tried to shake up the punch-less Cubs. ... When Double-A West Tenn
finishes the playoffs and OF Corey Patterson is called up, Baylor
said he'll be in center field. "I'll let him sit and watch the
first day and get the atmosphere knowing he's going to play the
next day," Baylor said.
Cardinals vs. Brewers
St. Louis: After missing 70 games this season with injury, Mark
McGwire will fail to hit 50 home runs for the first time since
1995, when he had 39. In the last four seasons he slugged his way
into baseball history with 52, 58, 70 and 65. Going into Sunday's
game, "Big Mac" had only 30 homers. ... The Cardinals, who Sunday
played their final game at Milwaukee County Stadium, go on to
Pittsburgh, where they will play their final three at Three Rivers
Stadium. Both cities are getting new ballparks next season. Milwaukee: Marquis Grissom needs just one more steal for 400 in
his career. ... Brewers C Henry Blanco has throw out 37 of 65
runners this season to plug a defensive hole that has long plagued
the team. ... The Brewers begin a seven-game road trip Monday,
returning Sept. 18 to begin their final homestand (10 games) at
venerable Milwaukee County Stadium.
