Astros 3B Ken Caminiti leaves team

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Houston Astros injured third baseman Ken Caminiti has left the team for undisclosed personal reasons amid a report he has entered a substance abuse rehabilitation center.

Astros officials said tonight that Caminiti, sidelined since mid-June with a wrist injury, had left the team. Fox Sports News reported tonight that Caminiti entered a rehabilitation center.

Several years ago, Caminiti, 37, admitted he is a recovering alcoholic. It was unclear whether Caminiti was seeking treatment for alcohol abuse.

"I'm concerned about it," Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said after tonight's 9-5 home win over Florida. "Baseball's been his life. ... He's had some setbacks with injuries. He's a very frustrated man right now."

The three-time All-Star ruptured a tendon in his right wrist June 15 against Colorado and underwent surgery four days later.

He was expected to be sidelined anywhere from eight to 12 weeks but apparently told manager Larry Dierker he would be back in August. But that never materialized.

"When you get set back, you get confused, you get worried," Dierker said. "I suppose everybody has to deal with that in their own way."

Caminiti had been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for the three-time defending National League Central champions. He batted .303 with 13 doubles, 15 homers and 45 RBI in 59 games.

Caminiti went to the World Series with the San Diego Padres in 1998 before signing a two-year, $9.5 million deal to return to Houston.
