Astros C Eusebio to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- A lack of support from his teammates has cost Houston Astros catcher Tony Eusebio a separated shoulder and the rest of his season.

Eusebio, 33, suffered a Grade III separation of his right shoulder Friday night when he went over the railing and into the Houston dugout in pursuit of a foul pop in the eighth inning of a 3-2 victory against Atlanta.

The veteran backstop did not receive any help from his teammates or third-base coach Mike Cubbage, who was closest to the play, and fell directly on the shoulder. Eusebio, who has spent each of his eight seasons with the Astros, is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on the shoulder within the next week.

"Tony made a hell of an effort and the guys in the dugout didn't help him," Houston first baseman Jeff Bagwell said after the accident. "That's a long fall and he's lucky he only has a separated shoulder. He could have broken his neck. It puts a damper on this win -- you've got to help the guy out in that situation."

Eusebio actually seemed to benefit from the length of his fall. If he had had less room to drop, he likely would have landed directly on his head.

"I knew when he hit the ground it was something bad," Houston pitcher Jose Lima said. "I hope he can come back next year and be fine. He's a tough man and a strong man."

Eusebio was hitting .280 with seven homers and 33 RBI in 74 games.

The Astros filled Eusebio's roster spot by purchasing the contract of catcher Raul Chavez from Class AAA New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League.
