NEW YORK -- Mets pitcher Rick Reed had no problems on the mound in his most recent start. His trouble started when he left Shea Stadium.

A group of fans, upset that Reed would not sign autographs, rocked his car Wednesday night and prompted an angry confrontation in the parking lot. Reed had pitched seven innings and was the winner in a 1-0 victory over Houston.

There were no injuries and Reed drove away with his wife and baby daughter, the Mets said Thursday.

Mets general manager Steve Phillips met with the team's security officials on Thursday to talk about safety procedures.

"It's something we're going to look at," he said.

Reed and the Mets traveled to St. Louis on Thursday. He was not available for comment.

According to Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz, a group of fans shouted at Reed as the pitcher and his family got into a car inside the shielded-off players' parking lot.

When Reed drove into the general parking area, the fans crowded around his car and again asked for autographs. Reed, Horwitz said, "politely explained that his baby was not feeling well and needed to get home."

At that point, some of the fans began hitting the car and rocking it.

The pitcher's wife, Dee, called WFAN -- the Mets' flagship radio station -- on Thursday and said that after a teen-aged boy struck the car and cursed at the family, Reed got out and chased him.

Earlier in the day, several angry fans called the radio station to complain about Reed's conduct.

"He was concerned for the safety of his baby and his wife," Horwitz said.
