Red Sox vs. Devil Rays
Boston: Manager Jimy Williams dropped RHP Tim Wakefield from the starting rotation and replaced him with RHP Ramon Martinez. "I know he's (Wakefield) disappointed, but he can help us there," Williams said. Martinez, currently on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right knee, is to pitch in a simulated game Tuesday and is scheduled to start Saturday against Seattle. Wakefield (6-9, 5.68 ERA) allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- in five innings during Sunday's 11-7 loss to Kansas City. ... Williams said RHP Rolando Arrojo (bruised right ankle) should make his next scheduled start. ... RHP Bret Saberhagen (groin), who is playing catch, has no timetable for a possible return. Tampa Bay: The Devil Rays have kept Boston RHP Pedro Martinez winless in his last three starts against them. It's the first time Martinez, who is scheduled to start Tuesday, has ever gone three straight winless starts against an AL team. "We've probably had as much success as anybody, but it's not a whole lot," Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said. In his past three starts against Tampa Bay, Martinez is 0-2 with a no-decision. ... RHP Cory Lidle is expected to start Tuesday's game against Martinez. The team has not officially selected the starter ... 3B Vinny Castilla (lower back) has resumed batting practice and might rejoin the Devil Rays early next month.

Indians vs. Rangers
Cleveland: The Indians started Monday night with a major league-best fielding percentage of .986 and had allowed a major league-low 38 unearned runs. ... Pitcher Charles Nagy began a 30-day rehab assignment Monday night, allowing one run, three hits in three innings, with two strikeouts and a walk for Harrisburg against Double-A Akron. Nagy had bone chips removed from his right elbow, then made three minor league rehab starts from June 19-30 before a bone bruise. Texas: The Rangers plan to activate rookie RHP Ryan Glynn from the 15-day disabled list to start Tuesday night's game against the Indians. Glynn has been sidelined since passing out in the dugout after a start against Boston on Aug. 11. He was hospitalized and was diagnosed to have neurocardiogenic syncope, a fainting condition that can be controlled with medication and a high-salt diet. ... The Rangers entered Monday night 13 games under .500 for the first time since the end of the 1988 season. They have lost seven straight series and split the previous two.

White Sox vs. Athletics
Chicago: RHP Cal Eldred is scheduled to make his first rehab start at Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday at Richmond. He has been on the DL since July 17 with a nerve problem in his right elbow. He will be limited to 50 pitches or three innings. ... Rookie RHP Jon Garland, struck below the right elbow by a line drive on Aug. 18 against Tampa Bay and later placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 19, will pitch at Double-A Birmingham on Wednesday as part of his rehab assignment. Oakland: 1B Jason Giambi sat out his second consecutive game with a strained left shoulder, the seventh game he's missed because of the injury. He underwent an MRI on Monday and trainer Larry Davis said, "It was essentially a normal study. It doesn't change much what we're doing (in terms of treatment), but it does take away the fear in the back of his mind that something is wrong." Davis said Giambi's range of motion with his left arm is improving. "We'd like to get him back to playing every day. But it will take a couple of days to get there," the trainer said. Manager Art Howe said the results of the MRI were very encouraging and, "It's about relieving the pain so he can go the rest of the way." .... RHP T.J. Mathews, who went on the 15-day DL retroactive to Aug. 11 with tendinitis is his right elbow, made his first rehab start Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento and is scheduled to pitch again Tuesday and Thursday, then will be evaluated. "He was a little sore after pitching instead of because of pitching, which is an improvement," Davis said.

Blue Jays vs. Angels
Toronto: Pitching coach Dave Stewart described Saturday night's heated argument between himself and reliever John Frascatore in Texas -- which began on the mound and continued in the dugout with Stewart having to be restrained -- as "water under the bridge." Frascatore also is willing to forget the incident. "There's really no differences between us," the right-hander said Monday. "We've learned from the same pitching coach (Dave Duncan), so we're both very intense. Dave and I are just here to get the job done." ... Darrin Fletcher's three-homer game against Texas on Sunday made him the second catcher in Blue Jays history to accomplish the feat. The other was Ernie Whitt, on Sept. 14, 1987. The homers were Fletcher's first since July 30, and the RBI were his first since Aug. 4. ... Prior to Monday night, Dave Martinez had hit safely in all 17 games he had played since joining the Blue Jays on Aug. 5 in a trade from Texas. ... Plans are in the works for the Blue Jays to play their 2001 season opener in Puerto Rico against the Rangers, in addition to an exhibition game against Texas the day before. Anaheim: RF Tim Salmon was named Monday as AL player of the week for a club-record fifth time in his career -- and second time this month -- by virtue of his nine RBI and 11 hits in 22 at-bats, including two homers. "Maybe it's because I have so many at-bats under my belt now," said Salmon, who has raised his average 44 points to a season-high .303 since July 20. "I have a game plan that's working now, and it's like I'm on automatic pilot. Early in the year, I was trying to find those things. I can remember three months ago saying to myself, 'Man, what on earth's going on?' But now, I'm at a point where I'm starting to resemble the Tim Salmon of old. I just wish I could put together a full season like this." ... RHP Tim Belcher, who's been on the 25-man roster for only 16 days this season because of elbow problems, is eligible to be activated from the 60-day disabled list when the rosters are expanded to 40 on Friday. The 14-year veteran, who underwent surgery in December, has allowed 14 earned runs over 13 innings in his four starts before going on the 60-day disabled list on July 3. ... Benji Gil entered Monday night's game having committed only two errors in his last 48 at SS, after making eight errors in the previous 25 games.

Yankees vs. Mariners
New York: A magnetic resonance imaging test on 2B Chuck Knoblauch's left knee showed no damage, manager Joe Torre said Monday night. "He's fine. He's taking a couple of days off," Torre said. "But he's had a tough year physically." The MRI was done Saturday after Knoblauch left his first minor league rehab game Friday night in Kissimmee, Fla., after being hit by a pitch on the outside of his left knee. Torre anticipated seeing Knoblauch on Friday night when the Yankees return home to play Minnesota, or soon thereafter. "It might be the first or the third or the fourth (of September)," he said. "We don't know yet." Torre added, "But I'm planning on having him back. He's still going to be a benefit for us." ... RHP Ramiro Mendoza threw 40 pitches off the mound for the first time Monday in Tampa as part of his throwing program and reported no problems. Mendoza is on the DL with tendinitis in his right shoulder. He's pitched in 14 games, including nine starts, this season, with a 7-4 record and 4.25 ERA. Seattle: RHP Gil Meche, who came out of a rehab start at Class-A Everett Sunday night after one inning, probably will not pitch again this season, Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. "I think we'll probably shut him down for the rest of the year," Piniella said. "His arm feels real tired and real heavy. We had to shut him down last night." Meche was supposed to be a mainstay in the Mariners' rotation this season, but has been limited to 15 starts. He has been on the disabled list twice this season with a strained right shoulder. Meche made his last start for the Mariners July 4 in Anaheim, going 5 2/3 innings in a 7-6 loss. He was put on the DL July 31. Piniella had hoped to add him to his rotation in September. "It was a little bit of a longshot for us," he said.

Lowell was a late scratch from Monday's lineup because of a sore left thumb.

Giants vs. Pirates
San Francisco: Giants LF Barry Bonds is playing his final four games in the ballpark where he made his major league debut in 1986, Three Rivers Stadium. He played for the Pirates from 1986-92, winning the NL MVP award in 1990 and '92. Bonds said that while the 1979 World Series champion Pirates were known as "being a family, we were a family, too (on division-winning teams in 1990-92). We played clubhouse basketball games and there was a real love on that team for each other." ... Before Monday, the Giants were the only NL team not to play in Three Rivers this season. ... Peters was to pitch Monday night for Triple-A Nashville. ... RHP Kris Benson starts Tuesday, two days later than originally scheduled due to a tired arm. ... 3B Aramis Ramirez partially dislocated his left shoulder diving into the turf trying to stop Ellis Burks' double down the line in the first inning Monday against the Giants. The Pirates' Single-A Bradenton rookie league team finished 34-26, its first winning record since 1991.

Astros vs. Mets
Houston: Tony Eusebio doubled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to a team-record 24 games. Eusebio, a part-time catcher, hasn't gone hitless since July 9 -- a span of 51 days and 45 Astros games. He broke the team-record set by Art Howe (1981) and matched by Luis Gonzalez (1997). ... RHP Jay Powell will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. ... 3B Ken Caminiti, out since June 16 with a ruptured tendon in his right wrist, took batting practice. It is uncertain when he will be able to return. New York: It wasn't quite Darryl Strawberry taking a swing at Keith Hernandez at photo day in 1989 spring training, but Lenny Harris and Pat Mahomes got into a shoving match in the clubhouse after a team photo Monday. "We play around like that all the time," Mahomes said. Harris said someone told him they'd heard the fight was real, to which he laughed: "If that had been for real, I would have beaten up 20 guys on this team." ... The Mets purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Jerrod Riggan from Double-A Binghamton and optioned utilityman Joe McEwing to Triple-A Norfolk. New York wanted an extra pitcher because reliever John Franco is day to day with a strained pectoral muscle in his left shoulder. ' ... GM Steve Phillips said he hadn't heard from first-round pick Billy Traber. The Mets offered the left-hander a signing bonus in excess of $1 million, but cut the offer significantly when they found damage in his pitching elbow. Helton's first-inning single Monday gave him hits in 14 of his last 15 road games. ... Jeff Cirillo, who strikes out once every 10.7 at-bats, struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning. Grace is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. MacPhail also met with Sammy Sosa's agents. ... CF Gary Matthews Jr. became the 10th player to hit in the No. 2 spot for the Cubs this season. Ricky Gutierrez had spent the majority of the season at No. 2, but manager Don Baylor recently moved him down and likes what he's done so far. "Ricky Gutierrez has been very good down in the six or seven spot. He's gotten some hits and he gives us some credibility," Baylor said. "I really didn't want to jam a bunch of guys at one through four." ... With LF Rondell White out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder, Baylor will try both Matthews and Roosevelt Brown there. "I'll give them some at-bats and see what I have in left field," Baylor said.
