Muscle spasms kept Erstad on bench

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Anaheim Angels outfielder Darin Erstad, challenging for the major league hits record, returned to the Angels lineup Friday night at home against the Cleveland Indians.

Erstad went 4-for-5, raising his average to .361. He missed the previous four games because of muscle spasms in his left rib cage.

Erstad leads the majors with 193 hits. He needs 65 hits in the Angels' final 34 games to break George Sisler's record of 257 hits in 1920.

Erstad was the Angels designated hitter Friday night. He left last Saturday's game against the Yankees after the third inning because of a muscle spasm.
