ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Lefthander Kent Mercker makes his return to the Anaheim Angels and will start against the New York Yankees on Saturday, three months after suffering a brain hematoma. The 32-year-old Mercker left a May 11 game against Texas at Edison Field after 1 1/3 innings, complaining of dizziness and severe headaches. He was taken to UCI Medical Center, where a CAT scan and arteriogram were performed. Tests indicated bleeding within the space of the brain and Mercker was placed on the disabled list on May 12. Further tests did not reveal an aneurysm. Mercker was 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in 12 appearances -- two starts -- before the brain injury. After spending 12 days in the hospital, including four in intensive care, Mercker has been told that chances for a re-occurance are virtually zero. Mercker spent the 1999 season with St. Louis and Boston, going 8-5 with a 5.91 ERA and collecting $2.5 million. He was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in three postseason appearances for the Red Sox. A former first-round pick by Atlanta, Mercker is 62-59 with a 4.23 ERA in 357 games, including 145 starts. He also has pitched for Baltimore and Cleveland and tossed a no-hitter as a Brave on April 8, 1994 against Los Angeles. Mercker also took part in a combined no-hitter on Sept 11, 1991 while with Atlanta. The Angels made room on the roster for Mercker by optioning outfielder Chris Hatcher to Class AAA Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League. Anaheim also placed reliever Mike Fyhrie on the 15-day DL with inflammation of the right shoulder. Fyhrie tossed an inning of scoreless relief in tonight's 8-3 victory over New York.
