AMERICAN LEAGUE
Orioles vs. Devil Rays
Baltimore: Jeff Conine snapped an 0-for-11 slump with his first
triple of the season in the second inning. ... C Brook Fordyce, who
played all of Friday and Saturday's extra innings games was given
the day off. "I think 25 innings in two days was enough," manager
Mike Hargrove said. ... Hargrove said Albert Belle, the DH Saturday
and Sunday, will return to right field for Monday's game at
Detroit. Tampa Bay: LHP Tony Saunders (broken left arm) played long toss
before departing to make his second rehab start Monday for Class-A
Charleston. "The priority is to get him through the year
healthy," manager Larry Rothschild said. "We're not to going to
have him until it's late, if at all." ... RHP Dave Eiland (left
hip) allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings during a
rehab start Saturday night for Triple-A Durham. His status will be
determined after a bullpen session Monday. ... The Devil Rays
recalled RHP Cory Lidle from Triple-A Durham and optioned RHP
Travis Harper.
Rangers vs. Blue Jays

nine games. ... B.J. Waszgis collected his first major league RBI
with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, and his first
major-league hit in the eighth. ... Gabe Kapler extended his
career-high hitting streak to 20 games, the most by a Ranger since
Ivan Rodriguez hit in 20 straight last season. The longest in the
AL this season is 22 by Toronto's Carlos Delgado. Toronto: Dave Martinez homered in his first at-bat as a Blue
Jay. ... The Blue Jays have hit 112 home runs at home, which
matches the club mark, set in 1998. ... Carlos Delgado's
sixth-inning home run ended a 15-game homerless stretch dating to
July 20. ... INF Chris Woodward was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse
after the game to make room for newly acquired 2B Mickey Morandini.
Twins vs. Tigers
Minnesota: OF Matt Lawton still hopes he can return to the
lineup Monday at Tampa Bay. He's been limited to pinch hitting
since spraining his right big toe a week ago. ... 2B Denny
Hocking's home run Saturday was the third of his career in Detroit,
only one fewer than he's hit in the Metrodome. He's hit 16 home
runs in 535 major league games. ... Manager Tom Kelly was unhappy
Corey Koskie misinterpreted a sign after his pinch single in the
ninth inning Saturday against Todd Jones. Koskie, thinking a
hit-and-run was on, was easily thrown out by C Brad Ausmus after
Hocking took the pitch. "We can take some of the winning and
losing and understand why you either won or lost, but on Aug. 5,
missing signs _ that's somewhat not acceptable," Kelly said. "I
don't think I'm asking too much on Aug. 5 to get the signs right." Detroit: RHP Jeff Weaver, a 7-3 loser to the Twins on Sunday, is
1-3 with a 10.69 ERA in four career starts against Minnesota. ...
Juan Gonzalez was 1-for-12 in the series, ending an 0-for-10 skid
with an eighth-inning single. He also had a sacrifice fly. ... RHP
Danny Patterson is eligible to come off the 15-day DL (right elbow
inflammation). He felt no pain after a throwing session Saturday.
Angels vs. Indians
Anaheim: The Angels have homered in 19 of 24 games since the
All-Star break, totaling 30 homers. ... Rookie Bengie Molina's 12
homers are the most by an Angels catcher since Lance Parrish hit 18
in 1991. ... 2B Adam Kennedy leads all rookies with 118 hits, 177
total bases and nine triples. ... OF Tim Salmon has hit .453
(29-for-64) in his last 16 games, raising his average from .259 to
.291. Cleveland: OF Manny Ramirez is day to day with a sore left
hamstring. Ramirez was on the DL May 30 to July 12 with a strained
hamstring. Since returning, he is hitting .355 with 11 homers and
26 RBI. "I think it was even too sore for him to pinch hit
because he couldn't run," manager Charlie Manuel said. "The only
way we'll make a move is if the trainers tell us Manny is going to
be out eight to 10 days, but they said it is day to day." ... 2B
Roberto Alomar has hit .375 (18-for-48) since missing four games
with an ankle injury. ... The Indians are 12-5 in Sunday games,
their best mark of any day of the week. ... RHP Dave Burba, who
left his last start with a blistered right index finger, was moved
back in the starting rotation to Wednesday. ... RHP Steve Woodard
moved up two days to Burba's spot. ... Cleveland is 22-11 when RHP
Paul Shuey works in relief.
Mariners vs. Yankees
Seattle: SS Alex Rodriguez was 0-for-9 with seven strikeouts
against Orlando Hernandez before singling in the first. He also
walked in the third and popped out in the fourth. "I always think
he throws well. He gave me one pitch and I got a hit on it,"
Rodriguez said. ... RHP Aaron Sele, who left Saturday's game with a
bruised right ankle after being hit by a line drive, could miss his
next start. "He's pretty stiff," manager Lou Piniella said. "We
won't know for a few days. It was a pretty good blow." ... Seattle
had lost 10 of 12 at Yankee Stadium before winning the last two
games. New York: In an odd sequence in the fifth inning, LHP Allen
Watson hit Seattle's Mike Cameron with a pitch and then hit him in
the back with a pickoff throw to first base. "It was kind of
funny. I think I got him in the same spot twice. Of course I didn't
mean to do it either time." ... David Cone will make another start
for the Yankees. It's just not certain when. Cone, who threw 137
pitches Saturday and remained winless in 15 starts, will throw on
the side Monday before manager Joe Torre decides when to slot him
next in the rotation. There are three options: pitch Cone as
scheduled Thursday; push him back a day or two and let Dwight
Gooden start; or skip him an entire turn to keep the rest of the
staff in rotation. ... 2B Chuck Knoblauch, who missed his fourth
straight game, said his right elbow is still sore. Torre said if
the elbow doesn't get better that Knoblauch could be forced to go
on the DL.
Royals vs. Red Sox
Kansas City: Johnny Damon has 15 multihit games since the
All-Star break. ... Mark Quinn was hitless, stopping a career-high

Red Sox intend to activate Tomo Ohka to pitch Monday night and
option Rick Croushore to Triple-A Pawtucket. ... Bret Saberhagen,
who pulled himself out of a rehab start Saturday night after just
six pitches, said he has not given up on returning this year.
Athletics vs. White Sox
Oakland: Tim Hudson blew his shot at tying the second-best
29-decision record since 1900. Coming into the game at 23-5, the
right-hander needed a victory to tie Wes Stock (Baltimore), Whitey
Ford (New York Yankees), Vida Blue (Oakland) and Ron Davis (New
York Yankees). Howie Krist (St. Louis Cardinals) and King Cole
(Chicago Cubs) were 25-4 after 29 decisions. ... Athletics manager
Art Howe is considering tinkering with his rotation for the
upcoming series against the New York Yankees. Kevin Appier (10-8)
is scheduled to start Thursday, but Howe might move him to
Wednesday, splitting up Barry Zito (1-0) and Mark Mulder (6-7).
"You've got to look at the long haul. How it's going to fit over
the next month, two months," Howe said. "(Zito and Mulder) have
done pretty well going back-to-back." ... A few Oakland rookies
got a scare Sunday morning when a Chicago police officer showed up
in the clubhouse. Turned out he was there as part of the hazing all
rookies endure. "They took it well. It was great," Howe said,
chuckling. "The kids took it well. Well, afterwards." Chicago: Paul Konerko, who was making only his second start on
Sunday since July 29, went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs
scored. Initially bothered by a sore hand, Konerko's playing time
also has been reduced since the White Sox acquired DH Harold
Baines. "Paul is a big reason we're in the position we are,"
manager Jerry Manuel said. "He'll get the bulk of the playing
time." ... There's something about the Athletics for James
Baldwin. Baldwin gave up five hits in eight innings Sunday for his
fifth career victory against Oakland. He hasn't lost to the A's
since Aug. 15, 1997, at Comiskey. "You can't expect him to pitch
his heart out every time, but he did today," catcher Mark Johnson
said. ... Manuel still hasn't decided who his pitcher will be for
the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, and a decision probably
won't be made until after the first game. ... Herbert Perry matched
his career high with four RBI.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves vs. Cardinals
Atlanta: OF Brian Jordan knows what Mark McGwire is going
through, because he also has patella tendinitis in his right knee.
Jordan changed to a more upright stance at the plate as a result
the last week, which has improved his power numbers. "I'm starting
to use my legs instead of just my upper body," he said. "I might
find something new and end up hitting 40 home runs." ... The last
time Kevin Millwood started at Busch Stadium before Sunday was on
Aug. 28, 1999, when he threw 10 scoreless innings and got no
decision in a 3-0 victory. ... Andruw Jones is the only player in
the majors to play every inning this season. St. Louis: OF Ray Lankford becomes a 10-and-5 man on Aug. 21,
which gives the right to veto a trade, but general manager Walt
Jocketty said the team won't trade him before then. Lankford has
struggled at the plate and in the field this season, and was
batting .248 with 17 home runs and 43 RBI. ... The Braves stole
three bases off new catcher Carlos Hernandez on Friday, but the
Cardinals believe he is much better defensively than that. "He's
very strong defensively," Jocketty said. "I think he was trying
to impress the people here and he rushed his throws." ... The
Cardinals led the NL with 180 home runs and were on pace to his
268, which would easily break the 1998 mark of 223.
Marlins vs. Reds
Florida: Luis Castillo missed his second straight game with a
strained hamstring. The major leagues' stolen base leader is day to
day. ... Derrek Lee and Andy Fox hit the Marlins' first consecutive

series. ... Henry Rodriguez is 4-for-18 with a pair of doubles in
five games since coming to the Marlins in a trade with the Cubs. Cincinnati: SS Barry Larkin missed a second straight game with a
strained knee. ... Bench coach Ken Griffey Sr. was taken to a

New York after feeling chest pains. Tests found no problem. ... Ken
Griffey Jr. bunted for a single against the Marlins' infield shift
and went 2-for-4 with a walk, extending his hitting streak to six
games. He raised his average to .246.
Expos vs. Astros
Montreal: The Expos' 10-9 win in 10 innings Saturday was their
third extra-inning victory in four games. Only St. Louis (which is
2-0) has been in fewer extra inning games in the majors this
season. ... Jose Vidro, second in the NL with 35 doubles, is on
pace to hit 54 doubles, which would be nine more than his career
high and would tie the club record set by Mark Grudzielanek in
1997. Houston: Roger Cedeno, out since May 26 with a broken hand, took
batting practice Sunday and said he felt good. Cedeno said he felt
only "normal pain," and that he was ready to play. ... Cedeno has
missed 64 games since going on the DL. Astros officials say they
plan to send him on a rehab assignment sometime next week and he
could return the week after that. ... Jeff Bagwell was scheduled to
play in the 1,427th game of his career Sunday, passing Jimmy Wynn
(1963-73) for fifth on the team's career games played list.
Phillies vs. Rockies
Philadelphia: Before the game, 2B Mickey Morandini was traded to
Toronto for a player to be named later. Marlon Amderson will be
called up from Triple A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre and join the team
Monday in Philadelphia. ... Kevin Sefcik was given a start in
center field only to give Doug Glanville a day off. ... Terry
Francona on RHP Vincente Padilla, who has made three appearances
since being acquired from Arizona on July 26, "I time he is going
to be a closer, but I have to get better acquainted with him.
That's been tough because he doesn't speak much English." ... By
winning, they avoided going 0-6, their worst road trip since going
0-7 from Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 1999, and avoided what would have been
their longest losing streak of the season (six). Colorado: The Rockies traded CF Brian Hunter to Cincinnati for
RHP Robert Averette. They will assign Averette to Double-A Carolina
and will select the contract of CF Juan Pierre from Triple-A
Colorado Springs. ... RHP Craig House was recalled from Colorado
Springs and optioned RHP David Lee to Colorado Springs. "Ideally
we want to start House in the middle and maybe in a setup role,"
said manager Buddy Bell of House, who accumulated 20 saves in the
minor leagues this year. "Lee has to get his mechanics down. He
was on the DL before coming up here and he didn't get a chance to
lock his mechanics down." Bell said there was a chance Lee would
be back for the September callup. ... On Terry Shumpert not being
in the lineup after delivering the game-winning hit on Saturday,
and giving Jeff Frye another start at second base, Francona said,
"I wanted to give Jeff back-to-back games. Shumpert is such a
valuable guy off the bench. He can sit for eight innings and then
come off ready to go."

Dodgers for a player to be named. In 72 games with the Pirates,

Nathan, on the DL with an inflamed right shoulder, will make his
second rehab start Tuesday night for Triple-A Fresno.
Cubs vs. Padres
Chicago: Chicago's Joe Girardi broke his nose and took three
three stitches to close after he was hit by a pitch from Woody
Williams in the ninth inning Saturday. Girardi is expected to be
sidelined two to three days. ...Sammy Sosa, who tied Gil Hodges for
48th place with 370 homers Saturday, is four behind Rocky Colavito,
who is 47th. San Diego: The Padres have won six of their last seven games
against left-handers. Before that, they were 10-20 this season
against lefties. ... San Diego pitcher Adam Eaton entered Sunday
with a team-high .368 batting average (7-for-19) but went 0-for-2
with a walk.

senior vice president, visited the Brewers' clubhouse before the

managers who played under Lasorda. "I just hope and pray Davey has
the success as a manager he had as a player," Lasorda said. "He
was one of the finest competitors who ever played the game." ... C
Henry Blanco, whose 10th-inning homer gave the Brewers a 4-2
victory over the Dodgers on Saturday night, has thrown out six of
the last seven runners trying to steal. ... Charlie Hayes, who
started at third base, entered the game hitless in his last 16
at-bats. Los Angeles: OF Gary Sheffield, who jammed his right thumb
trying to steal second in the ninth inning Saturday night, didn't
start, but said he hoped to be back in the lineup within a day or
two. "It shouldn't be any problem, it's just a little pain, that's
all," he said before the game. "I'll keep treating it with ice
and (electric stimulation)." Sheffield hit his big league-leading
35th homer earlier in the game, and has homered against every major
league team except Tampa Bay, who he's never faces. ... The Dodgers
acquired OF Bruce Aven from Pittsburgh for a player to be named
later, and optioned the 28-year-old outfielder to their Triple-A
Albuquerque farm club. Aven was hitting .250 with five homers in 72
