Blue Jays vs. Athletics
Toronto: 2B Homer Bush was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a hairline fracture of his left hand, suffered after being hit by a pitch by Seattle's Jose Paniagua on Sunday. X-rays taken Monday were thought to be negative, but they were reviewed by Oakland team doctor Jerrald Goldman, who found the fracture. Bush's hand was placed in a cast and he's expected to miss up to six weeks. RHP Mark Guthrie, tending to his ill father, is expected to report Wednesday to take the roster spot. ... Toronto will also have to make a move to clear a spot for RHP Steve Trachsel, who will join the team when it returns home Thursday. He's not scheduled to start until Friday. ... The Blue Jays don't play the A's in Toronto until Sept. 1. After Wednesday, the Blue Jays will have played six games in Oakland. Oakland: INF Olmedo Saenz was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. He hit a grounder to third base with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Monday night, then collapsed halfway to first. The ensuing double play nullified an A's run. Saenz was 17-for-46 (.370) with two home runs and eight RBI in his last 16 games. ... 2B Jose Ortiz was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Saenz's place. Ortiz leads the Pacific Coast League in hits (143) and is batting .348. He had a 16-game hitting streak earlier this season. "He's a right-handed bat," A's manager Art Howe said. "He's been so much better this year. He's been maturing and settling into one position." Ortiz was signed as a shortstop, but has been playing more at second base, which appears to be his future with the A's.

RHP Jaret Wright (shoulder) is scheduled to throw four innings in his second rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Akron. ... RHP Charles Nagy (right elbow) has been cleared to continue throwing off a mound, but will be closely monitored the next couple weeks. Tampa Bay: The Devil Rays placed 3B Vinny Castilla (lower back inflammation) on the 15-day DL. He could be sidelined an extended period. "I don't know how long it will be," manager Larry Rothschild said. "We need to find out what to do." It's the third time Castilla, who underwent a series of tests including a bone scan, has been on the DL this season ... RHP Dave Eiland (left hip) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Durham. ... The Devil Rays, after a series of recent trades, have reworked their starting rotation. Sweeney was hit in the right hand by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Esteban Yan on Sunday, and left with a bruised palm. The Royals were off Monday. Sweeney took batting practice at Yankee Stadium and said, "It's a little sore, but I could play if I had to." Manager Tony Muser decided otherwise after watching Sweeney hit. "He can't play, he's not 100 percent. We're going to try to let him rest it." Muser said Sweeney would likely not play Wednesday, but hoped to have him back for Thursday night's game against the Yankees. Sweeney is batting .342 with 16 home runs and 90 RBIs.
