Blue Jays vs. Athletics
Toronto: 2B Homer Bush was placed on the 15-day disabled list
with a hairline fracture of his left hand, suffered after being hit
by a pitch by Seattle's Jose Paniagua on Sunday. X-rays taken
Monday were thought to be negative, but they were reviewed by
Oakland team doctor Jerrald Goldman, who found the fracture. Bush's
hand was placed in a cast and he's expected to miss up to six
weeks. RHP Mark Guthrie, tending to his ill father, is expected to
report Wednesday to take the roster spot. ... Toronto will also
have to make a move to clear a spot for RHP Steve Trachsel, who
will join the team when it returns home Thursday. He's not
scheduled to start until Friday. ... The Blue Jays don't play the
A's in Toronto until Sept. 1. After Wednesday, the Blue Jays will
have played six games in Oakland. Oakland: INF Olmedo Saenz was placed on the 15-day disabled list
with a strained left hamstring. He hit a grounder to third base
with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Monday night, then
collapsed halfway to first. The ensuing double play nullified an
A's run. Saenz was 17-for-46 (.370) with two home runs and eight
RBI in his last 16 games. ... 2B Jose Ortiz was recalled from
Triple-A Sacramento to take Saenz's place. Ortiz leads the Pacific
Coast League in hits (143) and is batting .348. He had a 16-game
hitting streak earlier this season. "He's a right-handed bat,"
A's manager Art Howe said. "He's been so much better this year.
He's been maturing and settling into one position." Ortiz was
signed as a shortstop, but has been playing more at second base,
which appears to be his future with the A's.
Indians vs. Devil Rays
Cleveland: Manager Charlie Manuel said Manny Ramirez, who has
been used as a DH since returning from a left hamstring injury July
13, could resume playing in the outfield by the end of the week.
... With the recent acquisitions of several veteran players -- including David Segui and Wil Cordero -- the Indians are exploring
the possibility of sending OF Russell Branyan to the minors. "He
needs to play right field and get some at-bats," Manuel said. "He
has a big future in our organization." ... RHP Jaret Wright
(shoulder) is scheduled to throw four innings in his second rehab
start Wednesday with Double-A Akron. ... RHP Charles Nagy (right
elbow) has been cleared to continue throwing off a mound, but will
be closely monitored the next couple weeks. Tampa Bay: The Devil Rays placed 3B Vinny Castilla (lower back
inflammation) on the 15-day DL. He could be sidelined an extended
period. "I don't know how long it will be," manager Larry
Rothschild said. "We need to find out what to do." It's the third
time Castilla, who underwent a series of tests including a bone
scan, has been on the DL this season ... RHP Dave Eiland (left hip)
is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Durham. ...
The Devil Rays, after a series of recent trades, have reworked
their starting rotation. Travis Harper and Tanyon Sturtze will
pitch Friday and Saturday, respectively, against Baltimore.
Royals vs. Yankees
Kansas City: All-Star 1B Mike Sweeney was a late scratch from
the lineup -- he had been the only Royals player to start every game
this season. Sweeney was hit in the right hand by a pitch from
Tampa Bay's Esteban Yan on Sunday, and left with a bruised palm.
The Royals were off Monday. Sweeney took batting practice at Yankee
Stadium and said, "It's a little sore, but I could play if I had
to." Manager Tony Muser decided otherwise after watching Sweeney
hit. "He can't play, he's not 100 percent. We're going to try to
let him rest it." Muser said Sweeney would likely not play
Wednesday, but hoped to have him back for Thursday night's game
against the Yankees. Sweeney is batting .342 with 16 home runs and
90 RBIs. Dave McCarty took Sweeney's place Tuesday night. ... RHP
Brian Meadows joined the Royals a day after they got him from San
Diego in a trade for RHP Jay Witasick. Meadows got to Yankee
Stadium about a half-hour before gametime, walking in with his
Padres equipment bag in tow. "It's my third team in nine months,"
he said. "I guess I'm kind of getting used to this." Meadows took
a flight from San Diego at 8 a.m., arrived at Newark International
Airport and took a cab to the ballpark. New York: Manager Joe Torre has 1,350 career wins and ranks 24th
on the career list, two behind Chuck Tanner. ... 3B Scott Brosius
and IF Clay Bellinger were on the field with their children before
the game, starting a fundraising effort to benefit children in
hospitals. The "Yankees' Kids for Kids" program was initiated by
8-year-old Allison Brosius to provide toys, games, dolls and books.
"These kids may not feel good," she said. "If they get a toy,
maybe they'll know that people are thinking of them."
Twins vs. Orioles
Minnesota: LHP Mark Redman, Tuesday night's starting pitcher,
leads the AL in wins by a rookie with nine. ... RHP Hector
Carrasco, who pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief Monday, has

Matt Lawton, who sprained his big toe while scaling the outfield

Red Sox vs. Mariners
Boston: Ramon Martinez's one-inning performance in Monday
night's game, an 8-5 Boston victory, tied the shortest start of his
career. In one inning, Martinez gave up five runs and one hit, a
grand slam by Jay Buhner. ... Rich Garces, who improved to 6-0 with
a victory in relief Monday night, is 3-0 with a 5.79 ERA in his
last eight appearances. In July, Garces was 3-0 with a 7.50 ERA in
11 games. Seattle: RHP Gil Meche was placed on the 15-day disabled list,
retroactive to Monday, because of a strained right shoulder after
being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma of the PCL. ... OF Al Martin,
acquired in a trade with San Diego on Monday, was inserted into
center field by manager Lou Piniella Tuesday night although he
hadn't played there since 1993, when he was with Pittsburgh. Martin
has been primarily a left fielder. Piniella hopes to play him some
in right field, too.
Tigers vs. Angels
Detroit: The Tigers promoted RHP Adam Bernero from Triple-A
Toledo to make a spot start Tuesday night -- his major league debut.
He was filled in for Dave Mlicki, who is on the DL because of a
chronic sinus infection. RHP Erik Hiljus was optioned to Toledo to

assists, raising his career total to 76. ... Dean Palmer's start at
1B Monday was the first of his 11-year major league career. The
last time he started there was with Triple-A Oklahoma City in 1990. Anaheim: Scott Spiezio's pinch three-run homer Monday night gave
them their 15th victory in their final at-bat. "You get a couple
of them under your belt and you feel like you're always in it,"
outfielder Tim Salmon said. "It's a confidence thing. It doesn't
matter what kind of lead the other team has. A lot of it has to do
with the kind of players you have _ guys who get up for those
at-bats." ... Reliever Al Levine, who gave up four runs and four
hits without retiring a batter in the ninth inning of Sunday
night's 11-7 loss to Chicago, was placed on the 15-day DL because
of inflammation in his right elbow. ... RHP Matt Wise, who played
high school ball about 35 miles from Edison Field in LaVerne,
Calif., was recalled from Triple-A Edmonton after going 9-6 with a
3.69 ERA in 19 starts. "We're anxious to take a look at him
because he's a very exciting young pitcher," manager Mike Scioscia
said. "Wise will pitch in a long role in the bullpen so he can
give us some innings."

Rockies vs. Cubs
Colorado: RHP Pedro Astacio's start Tuesday was his 98th in a
Rockies uniform, tying Kevin Ritz for the most in club history.
Astacio's 12 strikeouts were the most by a Colorado pitcher this
season. The last time a Rockies pitcher had more was Aug. 20, 1998,
when Darryl Kile struck out 14 at Montreal. ... The two hits
allowed by Rockies pitchers equaled the club's all-time franchise

accomplished this feat. ... 1B Todd Helton ended an 0-for-17

uniform and his first career start at Wrigley Field on Wednesday.
Rose was acquired from Boston Thursday in a six player deal. Chicago: Newly acquired LF Rondell White had personal business
to attend to and was not expected to join the Cubs until Thursday
in San Diego. Cubs trainer Dave Tumbas has talked to the Montreal
medical staff about White, who has been on the DL since July 8 with
a strained right hamstring. "The doctors said he's always come
back too soon," manager Don Baylor said, adding he'll be cautious
with White. ... Baylor said he's considering minor league pitchers
Jamie Arnold or Ben Ford to fill the fifth spot in the rotation
vacated by the trade of LHP Scott Downs. Arnold, acquired from Los
Angeles in the Ismael Valdes deal, appeared in 36 games last year
for the Dodgers. Ford, who was added in the Glenallen Hill deal
with the Yankees, made eight relief appearances for Arizona in '98
and two starts for the Yankees this year. "This is not a tryout
camp," Baylor said. "I don't like to take too many mulligans."

swiped only 72 in 2000. "Our speed is off, and it's more
noticeable in the field than it is anywhere else," manager Larry
Dierker said. "We aren't running as much and aren't stealing as
much, because our two main base stealers (Roger Cedeno and Craig
Biggio) have been hurting." Florida: The team named Rick Williams director of player
development and Rob Leary an advance scout. It's Williams' second
tour of duty for the Marlins. He held various positions from
1993-97, mostly working with pitchers, before joining the Devil
Rays as pitching coach the last three years. ... The trade for
veteran OF Henry Rodriguez is proof the Marlins aren't strictly a
team that deals for prospects. "A page has been turned," manager

many games as possible. We're going forward to become as good as we
can become as quickly as we can."

artificial turf Tuesday at Scranton, Pa. The Mets would like
Hamilton to get 30-40 at-bats before he is activated. ... Bubba
Trammell, acquired last Friday from Tampa Bay, started in left
field Tuesday night for the first time with the Mets. After sitting
out his first game in New York, Trammell started two straight in

is being used in the early going to rest some regulars. "We have
no set plan, we're just getting a good look at him," manager Bobby
Valentine said.

throwing for Class-A Hickory on Thursday. He has been out a month
with a strained right elbow ligament. He started the season 8-1.

his overall on-base percentage is a meager .273. ... Milwaukee was
