AMERICAN LEAGUE
Twins vs. Orioles
Minnesota: LHP J.C. Romero made his first career start Monday
night. ... The three-game series is Minnesota's only visit to
Camden Yards this year. The Twins, 1-2 against Baltimore this year,
have not won a season series against the Orioles in four years. Baltimore: 1B Chris Richard made his Baltimore debut. ... The
Orioles recalled 2B Carlos Casimiro from Double-A Bowie.
Blue Jays vs. Athletics
Toronto: RHP Steve Traschel, whom the Blue Jays acquired in a
trade from Tampa Bay on Monday, will join the team in Toronto on
Thursday and enter the rotation. "He brings experience and good
control to the rotation," said Toronto manager Jim Fregosi. ...
LHP Mark Guthrie, also acquired from the Devil Rays, will join the
team after his father, who is ill, makes his doctor's appointment Tuesday. "We expect him here on Wednesday," said Fregosi.
"He'll work out of the bullpen." ... 2B Homer Bush, hit by a
pitch Sunday, had X-rays taken on his hand. He was cleared but
was scratched from the starting lineup. ... OF Shannon Stewart was
also back in the lineup after complaining of blurred vision in his
left eye Sunday. Oakland: OF Matt Stairs, the subject of many trade rumors the
past few days, said he was never worried about being traded. "If I
went with all the different rumors, I'd have nine different
uniforms right now," said Stairs. "There was a lot of talk, but
it was never on my mind. I walked in here at 1 p.m. (PT the trade
deadline) and the first person I saw was Billy (general manager
Billy Beane). I thought, well, it's too late now. Once the deadline
comes and goes, it's nice to see." 1B Jason Giambi said there was
never a sense that Stairs would be traded. "It was more
speculation than fact," he said. "We didn't think he was going
anywhere. If he can step up, that solidifies us not making any
moves." ... The A's did make a minor-league deal Monday,
sending Triple-A catcher Danny Ardoin to the Minnesota organization
for 1B Mario Valdez. ... The lack of moves didn't bother A's
manager Art Howe. "This team has gotten us to where we are now,"
he said. "I feel good about our chances down the stretch."
Red Sox vs. Mariners
Boston: The Red Sox placed 2B Jose Offerman on the 15-day DL
with a left knee contusion retroactive to July 30. INF Morgan
Burkhart was recalled from Pawtucket of the Triple-A International
League. The team requested unconditional release waivers on INF
Mike Stanley. ... The Red Sox and the Mariners, who began a series
Monday night, have the two best pitching staffs in the AL. The Red
Sox took a 4.24 ERA into Monday night's game, while the Mariners
were 4.35. ... Red Sox SS Nomar Garciaparra took a major
league-leading .392 batting average into the series. He's been at
.400 three times this season; .400 on July 14, .400 on July 17 and
.403 on July 20. Entering the Seattle series, he was 8-for-18 in
his previous five games. Seattle: The Mariners made a trade Monday, acquiring OF Al
Martin from the San Diego Padres in a trade for OF-IF John Mabry
and Triple-A Tacoma RHP Tom Davey. Martin, a left-handed hitter,
will join the Mariners Tuesday night. He is expected to share time
with LF Rickey Henderson and RF Jay Buhner. He also is insurance in
case DH Edgar Martinez gets hurt. With San Diego, Martin was
hitting .306 in 93 games with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs. ... 1B John
Olerud leads the AL in RBI in July with 29 in 27 games. But he was
hitting only .228 for the month.
Tigers vs. Angels
Detroit: The Tigers were the only team in the majors that didn't
make a deal in the final week before the trading deadline, but they
did make a roster move Monday. They gave OF Luis Polonia his
unconditional release and recalled OF Billy McMillion from Triple-A
Toledo. McMillion, 29, hit .345 with 13 homers and 50 RBI for the
Mud Hens. ... Manager Phil Garner is delighted that Juan Gonzalez,
the subject of trade talks with Seattle, is staying put for now
because it gives general manager Randy Smith an opportunity to
re-sign him when he is eligible for free agency at the end of the
season. "I think there's a possibility of bringing him back, and I
don't think it's a question of outbidding somebody else," Garner
added. "I do know that Juan feels comfortable here and he's not
unhappy. But he has the right to go look at free agency, and that's
OK. I mean, I was one of the guys who fought for that right. But
it's up to us to be as enticing as we possible can while we have an
opportunity to keep him here." Anaheim: Ron Gant joined his new teammates Monday after Sunday's
trade from Philadelphia for Kent Bottenfield. Gant thumbed a ride
to the West Coast on the Phillies' team charter, which was bound
for San Diego. "It was very strange," he said. "I kind of sat
back there in the back and didn't say much to anybody because I
didn't know how guys felt about me riding on the plane with them.
But from what I gathered, everyone didn't mind it at all. They all
told me good luck. I'm glad I got a chance to ride here with them
because I got a chance to say goodbye to a lot of good friends."
... ... Even though the Angels couldn't get another front-line
starting pitcher before the trade deadline, GM Bill Stoneman was
more than satisfied to obtain Gant for the everyday DH role. "I
really didn't go in with any expectations, other than, if something
was available that could help us, we'd do it. But you start every
day that way, whether it's the trading deadline or not."

Florida: 1B Derrek Lee, who had a game-tying RBI single in the
eighth inning Sunday against the Diamondbacks, began Monday with a
.404 average (19-for-47) in close, late-inning situations. That was
fourth-best in the NL. ... With Sunday's 4-3 victory over Arizona,
the Marlins improved to 22-14 in one-run games. Houston: RHP Shane Reynolds has been scratched from his
scheduled start Thursday afternoon at Florida. He left Friday
night's 5-2 loss at Atlanta after the first inning because of
tightness in his lower back. Reynolds returned to Houston on Sunday
to be examined by team doctor Bill Ryan.
Dodgers vs. Pirates
Los Angeles: The Dodgers have a chance to be one of only two
longtime NL teams with a winning record in Pittsburgh's Three
Rivers Stadium. The Dodgers were 85-85 going into a three-game

every day since the All-Star break and don't have a scheduled day
off until Thursday. ... LHP Carlos Perez, who starts Tuesday, has
been scored upon in the first inning of nine of his 18 starts. Pittsburgh: John Vander Wal, who is having a career year, signed
a $3.7 million, two-year contract extension Monday after the
Pirates rejected trade offers for him. When general manager Cam
Bonifay fielded trade calls, he told teams the Pirates were
interested only in acquiring "championship-caliber players ... and
he is a championship-caliber player." ... Bonifay made two deals
in three days, and was confident he would make a third until about
15 minutes before the 4 p.m. ET deadline Monday. ... The Pirates
left a roster spot open Monday after trading LHP Jason
Christiansen, possibly to leave room for INF Enrique Wilson. He is
on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Nashville. ... OF Adrian
Brown (hamstring) is at least a week away from returning. ... The
Pirates will face a left-handed starter for the first time in 17
games Tuesday, the Dodgers' Carlos Perez.
Reds vs. Mets
Cincinnati: SS Barry Larkin played at Shea Stadium for the first
time since rejecting a deal July 23 that would have sent him to the
New York Mets. He was booed heartily when his name was announced in
the starting lineup, and before his first at-bat in the first
inning. "You're supposed to get booed when you come to New York
... but I don't expect anything different," Larkin said. ... 1B
Sean Casey entered with a career-high 21-game hitting streak,
longest by a Reds player since Hal Morris' 29-game streak in 1996.
... RHP Scott Sullivan served the last of a three-game suspension
he received after hitting Colorado's Brian Hunter with a pitch,
setting off a brawl. ... The Reds are the only team that has not
been shut out this season. New York: The Mets didn't make any major trades before the trade deadline, and GM Steve Phillips said he was
pleased with the previous acquisitions of SS Mike Bordick, OF Bubba
Trammell and RHP Rick White. "We addressed our needs and we feel
happy about what we did," Phillips said. "We'll continue to talk
to teams through the waiver period and have discussions as we go
along." ... The Mets swapped minor league pitchers with Baltimore.
The Mets traded LHP Anthony Shumaker to the Orioles for RHP Juan
Aracena. Aracena will be assigned to Double-A Binghamton of the
Eastern League, while Shumaker will report to Triple-A Rochester of
the International League. ... LHP Rich Rodriguez accepted an
assignment to Triple-A Norfolk of the International League, but
Phillips said Rodriguez will rejoin the team when rosters expand
Sept. 1.
Rockies vs. Cubs
Colorado: Todd Hollandsworth, acquired in a trade from the
Dodgers for Tom Goodwin, is expected to join the team Saturday when
the Rockies host the Phillies. Minor league prospects Kevin Gibbs
and Randey Dorame, also picked up in the trade, will report to
Double-A Carolina. ... The Rockies are making their only appearance
at Wrigley Field for the three-game series Monday through
Wednesday. Colorado has its best road winning percentage all-time
at Wrigley with a 23-15 mark before the series opener. ... The
Rockies haven't played at Wrigley since May 5, 1999, when they
became just the third team since 1900 to score in every inning of a
nine-inning game. Chicago: After making two trades Monday, one acquiring Rondell
White from Montreal for Scott Downs and the other shipping Henry
Rodriguez to the Marlins, the Cubs recalled LHPs Daniel
Garibay and Phil Norton from Triple-A Iowa. Garibay
is slated to start Tuesday night's games against the Rockies.
Earlier this season, he made 21 relief appearances for the Cubs,
going 2-3 with a 4.94 ERA. ... The Cubs have won six of their last
seven series and split the other one.
Giants vs. Brewers
San Francisco: RHP Doug Henry, acquired Sunday afternoon in a
trade with the Houston Astros, was in uniform for the Giants on
Monday. Henry wore No. 41 Monday and will switch to 57 Tuesday.
Prior to Monday's month-ending game at Milwaukee, the Giants led
the majors in ERA during July (3.22). LHP Shawn Estes, Tuesday's
starter, has a five-game winning streak over his last eight starts.
It's his longest personal streak since an eight-victory run from
May 13-July 4, 1997. Milwaukee: RHP Kyle Peterson will begin a 30-day rehabilitation
assignment with the Triple-A Beloit. Peterson, the Brewers'
first-round pick out of Stanford in the 1997 draft, had shoulder
surgery in February. By defeating Colorado on Monday, the Brewers
won their second series in a row for the fourth time this year.
They have won three consecutive series once this year. Pitcher Jeff
D'Amico finished July with a 5-0 record and 0.76 ERA in six starts,
after beating Colorado 3-2 on Sunday. It's the lowest one-month ERA
in the majors since Atlanta's Greg Maddux had an 0.29 mark in
September 1995.
