Braves fill void with addition of OF-1B B.J. Surhoff

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves, with the best record in baseball despite an injury-depleted outfield, today acquired veteran B.J. Surhoff from the wheeling-and-dealing Baltimore Orioles.

The Braves also acquired reliever Gabe Molina and sent catcher Fernando Lunar, outfielder Trenidad Hubbard and righthander Luis Rivera to Baltimore. Atlanta with a 65-40 record and five-game lead in the National League East Division, have seen outfielders Reggie Sanders and Brian Jordan and first baseman Andres Galarraga slowed by injuries.

Surhoff, who will turn 36 on Friday, is a 14-year veteran who hit .293 with 27 doubles, 13 homers and 57 RBI in 103 games for the Orioles.

Molina, 25, has bounced back and forth between Class AAA Rochester and Baltimore. He was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA in nine appearances for Baltimore and 1-2 with a 4.94 ERA in 18 games for Rochester.

Hubbard, 34, was hitting just .185 with a homer and six RBI in 60 games. He is a six-year veteran who has a career .272 batting average.

Rivera, 22, is 0-2 with an 8.06 ERA for Class AAA Richmond. He missed two months of the season with a right shoulder strain and will report to the Orioles top affiliate, Rochester of the International League.

Lunar, 23, hit .185 with five RBI in 22 games with the Braves. He served as a personal catcher for four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux but was returned to the minor leagues on July 21. He will report to Class AA Bowie of the Eastern League.

The trade was the fifth for Baltimore in the last four days. In the midst of another disappointing season, the team has dispersed veterans Charles Johnson, Will Clark, Harold Baines, Mike Bordick and Mike Timlin in addition to Surhoff and Molina.
