Source: N.Y. prepared to deal Soriano

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees are talking to the Montreal Expos about getting Rondell White for two prospects, but first want to wait to see test results on the injured outfielder.

If convinced White is healthy, the Yankees are prepared to send infielder Alfonso Soriano, the jewel of their farm system, and Triple-A pitcher Brandon Knight to the Expos, a high-ranking baseball official said Thursday night, speaking on the condition he not be identified.

White has been out since July 8 because of a strained right hamstring. He said he is scheduled for an MRI test on Friday.

The Yankees are searching for a full-time left fielder, with White, Baltimore's B.J. Surhoff, Milwaukee's Jeromy Burnitz and Houston's Moises Alou prominently mentioned as possibilities.

Baseball's deadline for making trades without waivers is 4 p.m. ET Monday.

White's name has frequently come up in trade rumors, with the Yankees, Atlanta and Seattle supposedly interested. He is batting .307 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs.

White, a productive hitter who has been injury-plagued, has said he would enjoy playing for the two-time World Series champion Yankees.

"It's a business. The only time you can control what happens is when you are a free agent," White said Thursday after the Expos were swept in a doubleheader by the Mets at New York. "But if you get traded, you always want to get to the best team. It would be great."

New York traded left fielder Ricky Ledee to Cleveland in a deal for David Justice on June 29. Soon after, left fielder Shane Spencer was lost for the season to an injured knee.

The Yankees recently has been active in the trade market, mostly dealing prospects for veterans. Along with Justice, they have acquired pitcher Denny Neagle from Cincinnati and outfielder-DH Glenallen Hill from the Chicago Cubs.

Soriano, 22, has been coveted by most every team that wants to trade with New York. Knight, a 24-year-old right-hander, was acquired from Texas last December in a trade for outfielder Chad Curtis.

White began his major league career with the Expos and began this season as a career .292 hitter. He has hit .300 the last two years and averaged 22 homers in the past three seasons.

White, 28, twice was on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. He was slowed by tendinitis in his left knee throughout spring training.

In 1998, his season was cut short on July 20 when broke his right ring finger and tore ligaments in the finger trying to make a catch. In 1996, he missed 68 games after lacerating his spleen and injuring his kidney trying to make a catch.

The Yankees and Expos made a four-player trade last December, with pitcher Hideki Irabu going to Montreal.
