AMERICAN LEAGUE
Devil Rays vs. Tigers
Tampa Bay: DH Jose Canseco continues to play even though he
doesn't know when his sore foot will feel 100 percent. "I haven't
been through this before," Canseco said. "I can play on it. I am
not favoring it, but I haven't run all out." Canseco was activated
last week after going on the disabled list in late May. ... RHP
Esteban Yan, who starts Wednesday's series finale in Detroit, is
winless in his last five starts since a June 16 victory against
Texas. He has allowed 23 home runs to tie the team record set last
year by Bobby Witt and Rolando Arrojo. Detroit: OF Juan Gonzalez took another regular turn in batting
practice and could be activated Wednesday. That would make him
available for the Tigers' first visit to Texas, his old team, this
weekend. Gonzalez has been on the DL since June 25 with
inflammation of his left ankle. ... With Gonzalez and Tony Clark
(back) on the DL and 3B Dean Palmer nursing a tender shoulder, SS
Deivi Cruz made his first career start as a cleanup hitter Tuesday.
OF Bobby Higginson was back in his regular No. 3 spot after going
0-for-4 in the fourth spot Monday.
Indians vs. Blue Jays
Cleveland: 2B Roberto Alomar returned to the lineup after missing
four games with a sore left ankle. ... The Indians officially
announced they acquired RHPs Jake Westbrook and Zach Day as the
players to be named from the Yankees to complete the David Justice
trade. Westbrook, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 0-2 with a 13.50
ERA in three games for the Yankees. Day, also a 22-year-old
right-hander, was 2-4 with a 4.19 ERA at Class-A Tampa. ... The
Indians also announced that LHP Andrew Lorraine has cleared waivers
and accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Buffalo. Toronto: Manager Jim Fregosi disagreed with GM Gord Ash's
decision to fire pitching coach Rick Langford. "I don't think it
was the right decision," Fregosi said. "I just think it makes for
a difficult transition." Toronto assistant GM Dave Stewart, who
was San Diego's pitching coach in 1998, replaced him. Stewart will
remain as assistant GM. Fregosi and Stewart have butted heads in
the past. ... The Blue Jays entered the game with the third worst
ERA in the AL (5.47.).
Twins vs. Red Sox
Minnesota: The Twins lead the majors with 31 triples. Cristian
Guzman leads all players with 14, two shy of the franchise record
set in 1977 by Rod Carew. ... The Twins have hit 80 homers through
Monday, fewest in the majors by 18. ... In his last appearance at
Fenway, Joe Mays went 1 1/3 innings and allowed seven earned runs. Boston: Pedro Martinez was named AL co-player of the week. He
went 2-0 with 27 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.53 for the period from
July 17-23. ... OF Carl Everett apologized to Boston fans for the
on-field emotional outburst that resulted in his 10-game
suspension. "I apologize most importantly for not being on the
field during this 10-game period, for playing late through October
is the goal that each of us have set our sights on. ... I also want
to thank the fans for all the support they have given me,
especially here in Boston." ... Boston designated Sean Berry for
assignment and activated OF Trot Nixon from the DL.
Yankees vs. Orioles
New York: Dwight Gooden gets his third start with the Yankees on
Wednesday against Baltimore. He's 3-0 lifetime at Camden Yards. ...
New York scored a first-inning run Tuesday, which was a good omen:
The Yankees were 36-13 when scoring first and 16-29 when the
opponent opens the scoring. ... Jose Vizcaino started at 2B, even
though Chuck Knoblauch was 16-for-32 lifetime against Baltimore
starter Scott Erickson. Baltimore: John Parrish, who allowed three earned runs in seven
innings in his major league debut Monday, was placed in the
starting rotation Tuesday. He replaces Jose Mercedes, who was sent
to the bullpen. ... LF B.J. Surhoff, rumored to be headed to the
Yankees, said, "I haven't given it an ounce of thought. ... For
the umpteenth-thousandth time, this is where I'd like to play, this
is where I want to play." ... Mike Bordick grounded into a double
play Tuesday for the 12th time, one less than team leader Albert
Belle.
Royals vs. White Sox
Kansas City: Johnny Damon made "The Sporting News" list of 100
Good Guys. He was one of 19 major league ballplayers selected. The
issue goes on sale Wednesday. ... Damon has been on fire since the
All-Star break. He was batting .534 (31-for-58) in his last 13
games entering Tuesday's game. ... Monday's loss marked the third
straight game the opposition has posted a come-from-behind victory
against the Royals. Chicago: LHP Mike Sirotka signed a two-year contract extension
Tuesday. Sirotka (9-8) currently ranks third in the AL with a 3.72
ERA. ... GM Ron Schueler said Tuesday he's had preliminary talks
with other teams about possible trades but added, "right now, I'm
comfortable that we have enough here to win." ... RHP Cal Eldred,
who is sidelined indefinitely because of an irritated nerve in his
right elbow, will be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum this week in
Anaheim. Yocum performed "Tommy John" surgery on Eldred's elbow
in 1995. Eldred did have a test Tuesday on his elbow and Schueler
said the exam went well but could give no timetable to a possible
return.
Angels vs. Rangers
Anaheim: Tim Salmon started Tuesday with 23 career homers
against Texas, tying for the most he's hit against any team. He
also has 23 homers against Cleveland. ... Monday night's 6-5,
12-inning victory over Texas was Anaheim's league-leading 21st
one-run win. ... Darin Erstad's 12 putouts on Monday marked only
the second time in major league history that a left fielder
recorded a dozen putouts in a game. Tom McBride of the Washington
Senators had 12 putouts in a 12-inning game in 1948. Texas: With starter Ivan Rodriguez out for the season, Bill
Haselman becomes the Rangers everyday catcher for the final two
months of the season. He'll be backed up by rookie B.J. Waszgis,
called up from Triple-A Oklahoma. Waszgis was batting .266 with 13
homers and 62 RBI in 76 games for Oklahoma. ... Haselman is known
as a strong handler of pitchers, but he started Tuesday night's
game against Anaheim batting only .250 in 19 games. Rodriguez ended
his season hitting .347 with 27 homers and 83 RBI. "We signed him
as an insurance policy," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "The
premiums are paid and now we have to cash in that policy."
Athletics vs. Mariners
Oakland: Monday's loss to Seattle gave the Athletics an 11-14
record against AL West opponents. ... All-Star 1B Jason Giambi of
the A's was 4-for-23 (.174) since the All-Star break. Seattle: All-Star SS Alex Rodriguez was back in the Seattle
Mariners' starting lineup. "I put him in there," manager Lou
Piniella said. "He's ready to go." Piniella put Rodriguez into
the lineup after taking a long look at him take batting and
fielding practice before the game. The Mariners were 9-5 without
Rodriguez.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers vs. Pirates
Milwaukee: Jose Hernandez is struggling with a .239 average and
manager Davey Lopes attributes at least part of that to his habit
of trying to pull every pitch. Lopes believes if Hernandez would
take outside pitches to right field, he'd be a better hitter
without sacrificing power. Pittsburgh: Reliever Rich Loiselle will continue his minor
league rehab work but he'll transfer to Triple-A Nashville from
Double-A Altoona. Loiselle has been out since June 25 with bursitis
in his throwing shoulder. The Pirates want to make sure he's ready
to contribute before they activate him. ... Francisco Cordova is
scheduled for another sideline throwing session Wednesday. If all
goes well, Cordova should be ready to come off the DL, where he's
been since July 5 with right elbow tendinitis. Because he hasn't
pitched since July 3, it is likely he'll make at least one minor
league start.
Expos vs. Mets
Montreal: RF Vladimir Guerrero returned to the lineup and batted
cleanup after missing four starts with a right hip injury. ... OF
Rondell White, the subject of many trade rumors, was not in the
lineup despite being eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday.
He has been on the DL since July 8 with a hamstring strain. ... The
Expos have 14 players on the DL, including 10 pitchers. ... RHP
Hideki Irabu is scheduled to come off the DL on Wednesday night and
make his first start since May 26. He had surgery on his right knee
to remove torn cartilage. Irabu beat the Mets as a member of the
New York Yankees last season at Shea Stadium. New York: Mike Piazza played his first game at Shea since
getting beaned by Roger Clemens on July 8. He received a warm ovation
and delivered an RBI single in his first at-bat. ... All-Star 2B
Edgardo Alfonzo was back in his No. 3 spot in the lineup after
missing a three-game weekend series at Atlanta with a hip injury.
... Reserve INF Kurt Abbott, on the DL with inflammation in his
lower back, began his rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk.
Astros vs. Reds
Houston: Jose Lima gave up two homers in the first inning,
raising his season total to 31, one more than all last season and
the most in the majors this season. Lima gave up a career-high 34
homers in 1998. ... It took the Astros until July 24 to get their
first three-game winning streak of the season. Last year, the
Astros had a 12-game winning streak, an eight-game streak, a
six-game streak, two five-game streaks and a pair of four-game
streaks. ... During the three-game winning streak, the Astros
batted .400 with 10 homers. Cincinnati: The Reds shifted their rotation around so Elmer
Dessens and Pete Harnisch -- their two most dependable starters -- can pitch the first two games of a weekend series in Montreal. ...
Larry Luebbers, scratched from a start Saturday because of a sore
forearm, threw off the mound Tuesday and reported no problem. ...
Harnisch was still limping Tuesday on a sore left ankle, which
forced him out of his start Monday night. ... Chris Stynes led off
the game with a homer, the second time for a Red this season. Pokey
Reese did it June 16. ... Ken Griffey Jr.'s first-inning homer
broke a streak of 11 games without one, his longest dry spell of
the season. He had gone 43 at-bats since July 13 without a homer.
... Scott Williamson's first wild pitch gave the Reds 70 this
season, most in the majors. It's only the third time in franchise
history that the Reds have thrown 70 wild pitches in a season.
Cubs vs. Phillies
Chicago: SS Ricky Gutierrez leads the league with 12 sacrifice
bunts. The only Cub to have more sacrifices was Greg Maddux in
1992, who had 13. The last Chicago shortstop to have a higher total
was Ivan DeJesus who had 17 in 1979. ... The Cubs will travel to
San Diego on Aug. 3 to face the Padres for the first time this
season. ... 1B Mark Grace (20.6) and 2B Eric Young (19.1) lead the
NL in the toughest to fan category. Philadelphia: Starter Curt Schilling, who has sparked trade
rumors, began to clean out his locker Tuesday. GM Ed Wade wouldn't
comment on any possibilities of trading the staff's ace. Agent Jeff
Borris said that if Schilling is traded before the July 31
deadline "it will come at the last second. Ed will probably wait
until teams sweeten the pot at the end." ... 1B Rico Brogna spoke
to the media for the first time since being activated from the DL
on Saturday. He voiced his displeasure with the organization about
being benched and said he expected to be traded. Wade acknowledged
that the Phillies have been shopping Brogna. Boston and Seattle are
two clubs that have expressed interest in Brogna. ... Wade stated
he will remain in Philadelphia while the club travels to San Diego
on July 31 to finish work on trade possibilities ... Paul Byrd's
next start has been bumped back two days to Saturday and he will be
available out of the bullpen for the first two games of the Cubs
series. Robert Person (5-3, 3.03 ERA) will start Thursday against
the Cubs. Byrd (2-8, 6.14 ERA) will start against Los Angeles on
Saturday.
Marlins vs. Braves
Florida: OF Mark Kotsay was scratched from the lineup because of
back spasms. Mark Smith took over in right field. ... Luis Castillo
extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff single. He
is six games shy of matching his own club record, which he put
together late last season. Castillo shares that mark with former
Florida INF Edgar Renteria, a 22-game streak in 1996. Atlanta: Andy Ashby, who threw a four-hit shutout Sunday, became
the third Atlanta pitcher to hurl complete games in his first two
starts with the team. Max Leon did it first, though he was normally
a reliever and his starts came 10 months apart: Sept. 3, 1973, and
July 8, 1974. Buzz Capra duplicated the feat on May 19 and May 24,
1974. Ashby's consecutive complete games comes with an asterisk: He
gave up six runs in three innings against Florida last week, but
the game was rained out and none of the stats counted.
Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals
Arizona: St. Louis' Jim Edmonds is the last left-handed player
to hit a regular season home run off starter Randy Johnson.
Edmonds, then with Anaheim, hit two on Sept. 23, 1997. ... Armando
Reynoso, scheduled to start Wednesday, is seeking his fourth
straight win. He's already won twice this year against St. Louis.
... In the last 19 1/3 innings, the Arizona bullpen has an ERA of
0.93. That follows a 21-inning stretch with an ERA of 9.00. St. Louis: St. Louis is the first team to face Randy Johnson
three times this season. They've managed 15 hits in the first two
games -- both at Arizona and both Johnson victories. ... St. Louis
has homered in 79 of its 98 games this season, with 52 multihomer
games. ... Rick Wilkins is the only Cardinals position player not
to homer this year. He's played in just three games.
Dodgers vs. Rockies
Los Angeles: Dodgers ace Kevin Brown was struck by Tom Goodwin's
one-hopper on his upper right calf Monday, and he departed after
eight innings with a sore shoulder. "It's nothing that will make
him miss his next start," manager Davey Johnson said. "I am more
concerned about his right shoulder." ... Johnson credits the
bullpen with helping get the Dodgers get back into contention. "We
had to go through a period early where Jeff Shaw struggled, blowing
seven of 19 save opportunities," Johnson said. "Then he got hurt,
and Terry Adams, Mike Fetters and Antonio Osuna have picked up the
slack." ... Gary Sheffield is hitting .400 (16-for-40) with seven
homers and 13 RBI in his last 12 games. He leads the majors with
34 homers. Colorado: The Rockies placed RHP Mike DeJean on the 15-day DL
(strained oblique muscle in his right side), gave RHP Stan Belinda
his outright release and recalled RHPs David Lee and Giovanni
Carrara from Triple-A Colorado Springs. "It's really a matter of
being able to see David Lee and Giovanni Carrara," manager Buddy
Bell said. "Unfortunately, we had to let go a guy (Belinda) who
can still pitch and is an important guy in our bullpen and
clubhouse. We need to find out about some people, and that's the
way it happened." Lee and Carrara both pitched briefly for the
Rockies earlier this season. Belinda, acquired in an off-season
trade from Cincinnati, was 1-3 with a 7.07 ERA for Colorado. ... In
his last 16 games, Larry Walker, the two-time defending NL batting
champion, is hitting .163 (8-for-49) with two homers and 12 RBI.
... The Rockies apparently are willing to trade starting pitcher
Rolando Arrojo, and at least three teams -- Boston, Oakland and
Cincinnati -- have reportedly shown interest.
Giants vs. Padres
San Francisco: Manager Dusty Baker is mindful of the potential
toll of the Giants' longest road trip of the season. In the midst
of a season-long 12-game, four-city roadtrip, Baker rested three
regulars. CF Marvin Benard, 3B Bill Mueller and SS Rich Aurilia,
all of whom have had lukewarm success against Padres starter Woody
Williams, were held out. Among the replacements was 3B Russ Davis,
who came in 7-for-16 (.438) with three home runs against Williams.
"We've got a big stretch ahead of us and we have to rest guys when
we can," Baker said. "There's a lot of important baseball left."
... While the Giants' offense continues to explode, the pitching
staff has been the key to the club's 16-5 July record. The Giants,
ranked 10th in the NL with an ERA of 4.72, have posted a
league-best 3.32 ERA over the last 21 games with 13 saves. San Diego: RF and leadoff hitter Eric Owens returned to the
starting lineup after failing to start the last two games with a
deep bruise at the base of his right thumb. The injury continues to
bother Owens, whose average has dropped to .312 after batting just
.192 (14-for-73) in his last 19 games. ... RF Tony Gwynn, out since
undergoing knee surgery June 27, was able to put away his
crutches for good as his rehabilitation continues. ... The bottom
third of the Padres' lineup continues to stagger. C Wiki Gonzalez
is 2-for-33 in his last nine games and CF Ruben Rivera has struck
out 29 times in 19 games. SS Kevin Nicholson, who took over the
starting job when he was recalled from the minors June 23, has
hit only .233 and is now platooning with former starter Damian Jackson, who has batted .171 since May 5.
