MRI shows swelling in ankle, Achilles'

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar will miss at least three games with an injured left ankle, yet another setback for the Cleveland Indians, who have been ravaged by injuries all season.

Alomar was forced to leave Wednesday night's loss to the Kansas City Royals after the sixth inning with a sore ankle.

He underwent an MRI on Thursday, which showed swelling in his ankle and Achilles' tendon. Alomar has been told to rest it for 3-to-5 days.

Alomar, who also has been bothered by an injured left wrist and sore elbow this season, got a general cortisone shot Thursday. He stayed behind in Cleveland when the Indians opened an 11-game road trip Friday in Minnesota. He is scheduled to rejoin the team Tuesday in Toronto.

"There is a lot of swelling," Alomar said Thursday night after the Indians lost 10-6 to the Royals. "I had an old injury in my ankle and now there is swelling in the Achilles' tendon. I think that's why I have so much pain. They didn't find a tear, so that's the good news."

Alomar is batting .261 with nine homers and 42 RBI in 89 games this season. Despite the bum ankle, he's currently ranked second in the AL with 23 steals and earlier this week he became the 36th player since 1898 to get 400 career steals.

Although his offensive numbers are down, Alomar's defense has been solid.

Injuries are a major reason the Indians began Thursday's play 10½ games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

The Indians, who are awaiting the return of starting pitchers Charles Nagy and Jaret Wright, have had to use a record-tying 26 pitchers so far this season because of injuries.

With Alomar out, Jolbert Cabrera made his first career start of the season at second base Thursday and went 1-for-4. Cabrera, batting .245 with five RBI in 44 games, played six games at second last year.

The Indians would normally use utilityman Enrique Wilson at second, but he went on the 15-day DL earlier this week with a sprained right wrist.
