Phillies vs. Yankees
Philadelphia: Despite Sunday's loss, the Phillies have won eight
of 13 and 17 of 27. ... RHP Paul Byrd has not allowed more than
three runs in any of five starts since his June 18 recall from
Triple-A Scranton. He lowered his ERA to 5.87. It was 7.86 when he
was sent down June 2. ... After finishing a series Saturday with a
day game at Toronto, the Phillies did not arrive in New York until
1:30 Sunday morning. The Phillies' trip took them through Hamilton,
Ontario. New York: The Yankees recalled INF Clay Bellinger from Triple-A
Columbus and sent down Luke Wilcox before Sunday's game. ... The
first start for newly acquired LHP Denny Neagle was pushed back to
Tuesday night because of Saturday's rainout. Neagle, acquired
Wednesday from Cincinnati, is to make his debut against Curt
Schilling in the series finale. ... GM Brian Cashman blamed
Saturday's rainout against Florida on the fact that Yankee Stadium
does not have a sand-based field. "If we would have played
yesterday, it would have been the worst conditions we've played in
since I got here in 1986," he said. The rain had stopped by the
4:30 game time, but the field had already absorbed too much water.
"We've got what the Little Leaguers have," Cashman said. "The
field can only take so much rain."
Expos vs. Red Sox
Montreal: Vladimir Guerrero came up lame running a fifth-inning
grounder and left in the eighth but is expected back in the lineup
Monday. ... C Chris Widger did not play Sunday after leaving
Saturday's game with a concussion following a collision with Tampa
Bay's Jose Guillen. ... Manager Felipe Alou wasn't about to get
caught up in the controversy surrounding Boston's Carl Everett's
right-handed batting stance. "We have other things to take care of
and don't care about that," he said. "The time for us to look at
that stuff is not yet." Everett was ejected in Saturday's game
against the New York Mets after he and plate umpire Ronald Kulpa
argued over whether Everett was within the batter's box. Boston: Maybe the switch-hitting Everett should change his
stance while batting right-handed. He has 22 of his 25 homers this
year while hitting left-handed. ... John Wasdin pitched two hitless
innings to post is first save since June 26, 1999. It was just the
third of his career. ... Nomar Garciaparra, hitting .393, has hit
in 35 of 42 games since coming off the DL May 27. ... Troy O'Leary
has hit in eight of 10 games for a .350 average (14-40) since
returning from the DL July 3 after being sidelined for personal
reasons.
Reds vs. Tigers
Cincinnati: RHP Steve Parris lasted just 4 2/3 innings Sunday,
his shortest stint since he gave up seven runs in three innings
June 16 at San Diego. ... The Reds had their second streak of 12
straight games with a homer this season snapped. Those are the
seventh-longest such streaks in club history, a list topped by a
21-game streak in 1956. ... Though he was 0-for-5 Sunday, Ken
Griffey Jr. had an RBI on a groundout. His 68 RBI in interleague
play are the most for any player. ... OF Dante Bichette had an
infield single in the ninth to stretch his hitting streak to 10
games. Detroit: The Tigers' 6-2 win Sunday over the Reds was just their
third in 13 games following a game they scored in double-digits.
Detroit beat Houston 11-6 Saturday. ... Deivi Cruz is 4-for-8 with
three RBI as the Tigers' No. 5 hitter the past two games. ... 1B
Eric Munson, the Tigers' No. 1 pick in the June 1999 draft, was
recalled from Double-A Jacksonville when Tony Clark was put on the
DL Sunday. Munson is the fourth straight Tigers No. 1 pick to reach
the majors, joining RHP Seth Greisinger (1996 draft), RHP Matt
Anderson (1997) and RHP Jeff Weaver (1998).
Astros vs. Indians
Houston: 3B Bill Spiers has hit safely in 26 of his last 30
starts (41-for-122, .336). ... Rookie Mitch Meluskey's 10 homers
are more than any Astros catchers have combined to hit in a season
since 1995. The last time one Houston catcher hit as many as 10
homers in a season was 1993 when Scott Servais hit 11. ... 1B Jeff
Bagwell is Houston's only opening day starter not to have been
injured this season. ... Manager Larry Dierker has not used the
same lineup in three consecutive games all season. Cleveland: In his last 20 games, 1B-OF Richie Sexson has hit

Braves vs. Devil Rays
Atlanta: Manager Bobby Cox served the third game of a five-game
suspension for bumping an umpire. ... INF Steve Sisco was recalled
from Triple-A Richmond to replace 2B Quilvio Veras, who was placed
on the DL because of his season-ending knee injury. ... The Braves
have outhomered the Devil Rays 10-1 in four games at Tampa Bay,
including 7-0 in 1998. ... CF Andruw Jones is the only major
leaguer to play in every inning of every game this year. His first
homer Sunday off Esteban Yan traveled an estimated 426 feet. The
second went 405. Tampa Bay: CF Gerald Williams has four homers and 11 RBI in his
last five games. ... DH Jose Canseco, out since May 25 with a
strained left heel, remains on schedule to return Wednesday for the
start of a two-game series at Toronto. ... 3B Vinny Castilla and SS
Felix Martinez had the day off, replaced in the lineup by Russ
Johnson and Ozzie Guillen. ... RHP Esteban Yan, who pitched seven
innings, settled down after giving up three homers. He struck out
the last four batters he faced, tying a team record. ... RHP Dave
Eiland, on the DL with a hip injury, had what he described as a
minor setback during a rehab start at Triple-A Durham on Saturday.
He allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings before leaving
because of discomfort in the hip.
Marlins vs. Orioles
Florida: Luis Castillo recorded his major league-leading 39th
stolen base in the third inning of Sunday's game against Baltimore.
He's 17-for-36 (.472) over his last eight games. ... Mark Kotsay
tied a major league record with two outfield assists in the fifth
inning. He had three in the game for a career high. He leads
Marlins' outfielders with eight. ... The Marlins faced Pat Rapp,
who is Florida's career leader in wins and losses (47-43) although
he had only one winning season in five years with the club. Baltimore: The Orioles collected 16 hits for the fifth time this
season, tying their season high. ... Harold Baines appeared in his
1,600th game as a DH. ... Every Baltimore starter had at least one
base hit and seven had RBI. ... B.J. Surhoff is 55-for-155 (.367)
over his last 36 games. He has raised his batting average 54 points
to .291 in this span.
Cardinals vs. Twins
St. Louis: The Cardinals placed LHP Mike Mathews on the 15-day
DL. He broke the fourth metacarpal in his left hand Saturday night.
2B Placido Polanco was activated from the DL to replace Mathews.
Polanco was placed on the DL July 4, retroactive to July 1, with a
strained right hamstring. ... The Cardinals are in the midst of a
stretch in which they play 17 of their first 20 games after the
All-Star break on the road. Their current 11-game road trip is the
longest of the season. They are 2-2 so far on the trip. Minnesota: Manager Tom Kelly missed his fourth straight game to
be with his father in Fort Myers, Fla. Joe Kelly is recovering from
a heart bypass operation and remained in intensive care on Sunday.
A Twins spokesman said there was no timetable for Kellly to return
to the team, but that the manager would probably come back when Joe
Kelly is released from intensive care. Third base coach Ron
Gardenhire is managing in Kelly's absence. "It's a little strange
not seeing him every day, but TK's got some place he's got to be
right now," said 3B Corey Koskie. "Our thoughts and prayers are
with him." ... The Twins will be glad to see the Cardinals leave
town; Minnesota is 6-10 in interleague play this year. This is the
final interleague series of the year. ... Mark McGwire's absence
(he's on the DL with patella tendinitis in his right knee) is
expected to result in about 20,000 fewer tickets sold for the
three-game series, estimated Dave St. Peter, the Twins senior vice
president for business affairs.
Brewers vs. White Sox
Milwaukee: The Brewers have given up four grand slams this
season. ... Tyler Houston's 10th homer tied a career high, set last
season when had nine for the Cubs and one with the Indians. ... The
Brewers, in their third NL season, are 6-7 in interleague play this
season. ... Milwaukee scored twice in the first inning, then gave
up three in the bottom half. "It's a bad history for us this year,
holding opponents down after scoring runs," manager Davey Lopes
said. "It has to be 50 percent of the time that we score, they do
also." ... Jeromy Burnitz's average dipped to .217 after an
0-for-4 day Sunday. Burnitz was 3-for-11 during a three-game trip
to Kansas City and was only 9-for-42 in the Brewers' previous
homestand. ... The Brewers have a Chicago flavor with ex-Cubs Jose
Hernandez, Tyler Houston and Ray King and former White Sox John
Snyder and Jason Bere. Bere, 24-7 with the White Sox in 1993 and
1994, will face his old team for the first time Monday. Chicago: Magglio Ordonez went 4-for-4 with a career-high six
RBI Sunday, despite a sore elbow where he was hit by a pitch
Saturday. ... The White Sox sent left-handed reliever Jesus Pena to
Double-A Birmingham and called up Mark Buehrle from the same team.
Manager Jerry Manuel said Pena wasn't demoted as punishment for
saying after Saturday's game that he intentionally hit the
Cardinals' Eduardo Perez in retaliation for Ordonez being plunked.
Buehrle pitched the ninth Sunday. ... GM Ron Schueler said he's not
against making a trade before the deadline to help the team in its
drive for the playoffs, but it has to be the right one. "It's nice
to say, `Let's go get somebody,' but I don't know who to take out
of that lineup," Schueler said. ... Chicago's most pressing could
be its rotation. Cal Eldred left his last start Friday in the fifth
inning with a sore elbow, but trainer Herm Schneider said Sunday
that Eldred was much improved. Eldred will throw in the bullpen
Monday and see how he feels before it is determined if he will miss
a start.
Rangers vs. Giants
Texas: David Segui started at first base Sunday, marking his
1,000th career appearance at the position. ... The Giants are the
Rangers' last interleague opponent this season ... On June 12,
1997, the Giants and the Rangers played the first interleague game
in history. The Giants won 4-3 at Arlington. San Francisco: Giants manager Dusty Baker said before Sunday's
game that he will rest Jeff Kent on Monday. It will be just the
second time that the second baseman hasn't started. Kent, who leads
the National League in RBI, recently had stomach flu and dropped
12 pounds. ... Baker needs two more victories to match Leo Durocher
with 1,160 for third place on the Giants' career list. ... Livan
Hernandez will make his 100th career start Monday against Ryan
Glynn.
Mariners vs. Diamondbacks
Seattle: Rickey Henderson was 3-for-5, moving into 35th place
with 2,875 hits, two more than Babe Ruth. His first-inning double
gave him 477, moving past Zack Wheat into 50th place that list. ...
Henderson was back in LF and his customary leadoff spot after
missing two games with a bruised left elbow. ... The Mariners
started their fourth straight game without DH Edgar Martinez.
Martinez is hitting .357 with a 13-game hitting streak and 87 RBI
but doesn't start interleague games. Arizona: The Diamondbacks optioned INF-OF Travis Lee to Triple-A
Tucson, making roster room to allow Nelson Figueroa to make his
third major league start against the Mariners. ... Figueroa goes
back to Tucson on Monday, and his place will be taken by Geraldo
Guzman, the Diamondbacks' scheduled starter in the next game.
Guzman is with Double-A El Paso. ... 1B Alex Cabrera, who hit .571
in his first week in the majors, is eligible to return from the DL
on Monday and will be evaluated in Phoenix before the next game.
Cabrera is with Tucson of the Pacific Coast League.
Cubs vs. Royals
Chicago: Sammy Sosa has fond memories of Kansas City manager
Tony Muser, Chicago's batting coach for five years before he became
manager of the Royals. "I have a lot of respect for Tony," Sosa
said. "He was always asking you questions. If you got one hit in a
game, he wanted three. He was never satisfied with anything you do
and that's the type of guy I like to have around. He was a great
hitting coach. I learned a lot from him." Kansas City: SS Rey Sanchez, who was hitting ninth much of the
year, has begun seeing a lot of action in the second spot in the
batting order. Muser never ceases to be amazed at the way fans
embrace the team. "It's phenomenal," Muser said. "As you travel
all over the United States, somehow, somewhere, somebody's had some
type of roots, whether it's born there or been there or lived
there, in Chicago. I stopped for breakfast this morning and saw
15-16 Cubs hats floating through (the restaurant). They have a
great following."
Athletics vs. Rockies
Oakland: Manager Art Howe said RHP Omar Olivares (3-8) is still
at least two weeks away from returning to the mound. Olivares,
sidelined with a strained right shoulder, was expected to play
catch Monday or Tuesday. "He started from scratch a week ago. His
arm started hurting again," Howe said. "We went back to ground
zero." ... All-Star 1B Jason Giambi said he would love to play in
Colorado, which he considered a much better hitter's park than the
Oakland Coliseum. "That park probably costs me six to eight home
runs a year, depending on how cold it is at the beginning and end
of the year," said Giambi, who has 22 homers this season. "The
park makes me hit more line drives and keeps me from trying to
elevate the ball. It helps me on the road." Colorado: The Rockies on Sunday recalled RHP Bobby Chouinard
from Triple-A Colorado Springs. It is Chouinard's first appearance
in the majors since he was charged with aggravated assault for
allegedly pointing a handgun at his wife last Christmas. Chouinard,
who replaced injured LHP Scott Karl, still faces a trial in
October. To make room for Chouinard on the -man roster, OF Bubba
Carpenter was designated for assignment. ... RF Jeffrey Hammonds
was scratched from the starting lineup because of flu-like
symptoms. He was replaced by Darren Bragg, who was hitting .221
with 41 strikeouts in 149 at-bats. ... Placed C Scott Servais on
the 15-day DL with a strained right calf. Recalled C Ben Petrick
from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Angels vs. Padres
Anaheim: CF Garrett Anderson was back in the lineup after
missing Saturday's game at Los Angeles with a tender right knee.
... Troy Glaus (28), Anderson (26), Mo Vaughn (24), Tim Salmon (18)
and Darin Erstad (18) are on pace to become the first quintet in
major league history to hit 30 homers. ... Glaus, from Carlsbad in
northern San Diego County, originally was a second-round pick of
the Padres in the June 1994 draft but didn't sign. ... RHP Brian
Cooper, scheduled to start Monday night against the Padres, was
recalled from Triple-A Edmonton and RHP Lou Pote was optioned to
make room on the roster. San Diego: INF Joe Vitiello's contract was purchased from
Triple-A Las Vegas and he started at first base. He became the 45th
player to appear in at least one game for the Padres this year. The
club record is 48 in 1991. Vitiello appeared in 205 games with the
Kansas City Royals from 1995-99 and is a career .235 hitter with 21
homers and 83 RBI. He hit .350 with 11 homers and 46 RBI for Las
Vegas and was voted the player of the game in the Triple-A All-Star
Game on Wednesday after going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and
three runs scored. ... OF Dusty Allen was optioned back to Las
Vegas to make room for Vitiello. Allen went 0-for-9 with two walks
and five strikeouts in nine games. ... Vitiello started at 1B in
place of Ryan Klesko, who is in a 2-for-20 slump. ... RHPs Brian
Boehringer and Carlton Loewer are scheduled to undergo arthroscopic
shoulder surgery on Tuesday. ... Damian Jackson ended an RBI
drought of 67 innings with his triple in Saturday night's 4-1 win
over Seattle.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pirates vs. Dodgers
Pittsburgh: Jimmy Anderson was recalled from Double-A Altoona to
start Sunday's game and Bronson Arroyo was recalled from triple-A
Nashville to start on Monday. They are filling the roster spots
vacated by RHP Francisco Cordova and OF Adrian Brown, who were
placed on the disabled list Saturday. ... Of the 10 managers the
Pirates have employed since 1952, the only ones to complete at
least four full seasons are Danny Murtaugh, Chuck Tanner and Jim
Leyland. Gene Lamont has been assured by owner Kevin McClatchy that
he will be the fourth, but the team won't give Lamont an extension
beyond this season. Lamont's won-lost record is 342-376 since being
named AL manager of the year in 1993 with the White Sox. Los Angeles: Manager Davey Johnson, whose team was trying to
avoid falling to the .500 mark for the first time since April 8
when they hosted Pittsburgh on Sunday, was hospitalized Sunday
after experiencing dizziness caused by an irregular heartbeat.
Bench coach Jim Tracy will fill in during his absence. "Davey
lives and dies with this," said C Todd Hundley, who was called up
to the majors for the first time by the New York Mets one week
before Johnson's firing in 1990. "This year has taken a toll on
all of us, physically." ... 2B Mark Grudzielanek rejoined the team
after spending more than a week away because of a viral infection.
"For something to knock me down like that for that period of time
was what I was worried about and confused about," said
Grudzielanek, who took part in a light workout Sunday and may be
ready to play on Monday night. "I've been through things like
that, but this was by far the worst. Hopefully, it'll stay away
from the rest of the guys." ... Shawn Green, fighting a 7-for-61
that has dropped his average from .326 to .287, said before
Sunday's game that he didn't want to be lowered a couple of spots
in the batting order. ... CF Devon White, who hasn't played since
May 4 because of a partially torn rotator cuff, looked sharp in the
batting cage Sunday and may be back before the before the end of
the month. "I've got to get my hands strong and get in baseball
shape," White said. "It's going to be the end of this week or
next week, but I'm close to returning to the lineup."
