Yankees C Posada, Devil Rays IF Smith suspended for fight

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- New York Yankees All-Star catcher Jorge Posada and Tampa Bay Devil Rays infielder Bobby Smith were suspended for one game apiece by Major League Baseball today for their fight on Saturday.

The two also were fined an undisclosed amount after brawling during New York's 6-1 win. Posada likely will appeal his suspension, as the Yankees open a four-game interleague series with the New York Mets tonight.

Smith will have the right to appeal when he returns from the disabled list. He is expected to miss up to four weeks after colliding with Detroit's Robert Fick at first base on Wednesday.

The fight occured in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jeff Nelson struck out Smith, who appeared to lose his balance and shove Posada. Posada pushed back, triggering a wild but brief bench-clearing brawl that resulted in the ejections of both players.

Posada is having his best season, batting .313 with 14 homers and 40 RBI, and was named to his first All-Star team by his own manager, Joe Torre.

Smith has been up and down between the minor and major leagues this year and is hitting .311 with three homers and 14 RBI over 20 games, filling in at second and third base.
