three straight games with a homer ended. His lone hit was a single.
... Luis Mercedes pitched four innings of scoreless relief and
could supplant Jason Johnson in the starting rotation. Manager Mike
Hargrove issued a rapid "no comment" when asked if that could
happen.
Tigers vs. Devil Rays
Detroit: OF-DH Juan Gonzalez (sore left foot) and 1B Tony Clark
(back spasms) were scratched from the starting lineup. ...
Tuesday's scheduled starting pitcher, Dave Mlicki, has allowed 16

All-Star break. Manager Larry Rothschild did not rule using Canseco
as pinch-hitter when the Devil Rays play at Florida this weekend.
White Sox vs. Royals
Chicago: The White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Jon Garland
from Triple-A Charlotte. He took the roster spot of Kip Wells, who
was optioned to Charlotte. Garland, who was 9-2 with a 2.26 ERA in
16 starts in Charlotte, is scheduled to make his major league debut
on Tuesday against Kansas City. ... Chicago has won 10 straight
road games against clubs with a .500 record or better, the most
since 1900 according to Elias Sports Bureau. Kansas City: Manager Tony Muser said that Jeff Suppan will be
moved to the bullpen. Suppan, who is 2-6 with a 5.57 ERA, will be

spring training. Stein was expected in Kansas City on Monday and
will be activated prior to a probable Friday start. ... The Royals
are in the middle of an 18-game stretch in which 15 of the games
are at home. A three-game trip to Houston this weekend marks the
only excursion during the stretch.
Red Sox vs. Twins
Boston: The Red Sox (38-39), who are below .500 for the first
time since April 11 when they were 3-4, haven't won any of their
last seven series. Boston is 10-21 since taking two of three from
the New York Yankees in late May. ... RHP Pedro Martinez, on the

Minneapolis on Monday. He is eligible to come off the disabled list
July 11, the date of the All-Star game. ... OF Bernard Gilkey,
recently released by the Arizona Diamondbacks, continued to work
out with the Red Sox, but team officials said they had made no

ready to make his scheduled start Wednesday for Triple-A Oklahoma.
He has been on the disabled list since June 21 with weakness in his
throwing shoulder, and isn't expected to rejoin the Rangers
starting rotation until after the All-Star break. ... Manager
Johnny Oates said the Rangers probably won't know until at least
Friday the long-term prognosis for SS Royce Clayton, who left
Sunday night's game with a strained oblique muscle in his left
side. Oates said the muscle was already tender from a dive Clayton
made in last Thursday's game at Oakland and was aggravated in
Sunday's game. Oates said it's unlikely that Clayton will play
again before next week's All-Star break and that the disabled list
is still a possibility.
Mariners vs. Angels

Pittsburgh: Bad news for the Pirates' pitching: Francisco
Cordova had to leave Monday's game after four innings because of a
sore elbow. He's already been on the DL this year with a similar
problem. "I think he will miss a turn for sure," Pirates manager
Gene Lamont said. "His control hasn't been Cordova-esque. We need
to get him well." LHP Jason Christiansen, who gave up a homer to
Henry Rodriguez, had back spasms and pitched only one-third of an
inning. He might also land on the DL, Lamont said. ... The Pirates
activated LHP Scott Sauerbeck from the DL, where he'd been since
June 15 with a left elbow sprain. Sauerbeck, who made two scoreless

since Jay Tibbs lost 16 in 1985. ... Last year, Parris tied Pete
Harnisch for tops on the club in complete games with two. This

went 80 games into the season without a complete game. ... RHP Andy
Larkin, promoted from Triple-A Louisville hours before when RHP

victory over Arizona on Sunday without allowing a hit or a run. Arizona: The Diamondbacks placed rookie 1B Alex Cabrera on the
15-day DL and recalled RHP Nelson Figueroa from Triple-A Tucson.

with lower-back inflammation, retroactive to June 30. To replace

infielder David Lamb from Triple-A Norfolk. The Mets transferred SS
Rey Ordonez to the 60-day disabled list. ... Mike Piazza's 71 RBI

Kingman had 69 in 1976. Florida: Marlins RHP A.J. Burnett and reliever Dan Miceli will

ruptured ligament in the thumb, will start for Class A Brevard
County at Fort Myers against the Miracle. Miceli, healing from a
tightness in the forearm, will pitch an inning for the Gulf Coast
League Melbourne Marlins against the Tigers. ... The Marlins' 91
home runs are the most by a Marlins team before the All-Star break,
snapping the 82 hit in 1996. ... The 41-41 start is the second-best
in team history and the third time the Marlins have been at .500 or
better after the midpoint of the season. ... SS Alex Gonzalez
returned to the starting lineup after not starting the past six
games since sustaining an injury to the middle finger of his
throwing hand against the Cubs on June 25th.

only Thursday, did not play Sunday in New York due to a recurrence

day-to-day, but manager Bobby Cox said he won't play for awhile,
which could mean the entire four-game series with Montreal. ...
Chipper Jones, who didn't play Sunday because of the flu, was back
in the lineup against the Expos. ... John Smoltz, on the disabled
list and out for the season after elbow surgery, will take part in
a three-day celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe this weekend.
The field includes Michael Jordan and John Elway with a first prize
of $75,000 in the $500,000 event.

game. He was batting .410 (16-of-39) in that span with three homers

In their last starts, pitchers Jason Bere, Jimmy Haynes, Jamey
Wright and Jeff D'Amico combined to allow only seven earned runs in
31 1-3 innings (2.01 ERA). Opponents had a .163 batting average
against the four starters. ... None of the pitchers in the current
rotation, which also includes Monday starter John Snyder, has
thrown a complete game this year in 56 starts. The only complete
game was thrown by Steve Woodard, who has been banished to the
bullpen because of inconsistency.
Rockies vs. Padres
Colorado: Larry Walker, moved from right field to left field to
take some pressure off his healing right elbow, got Monday night
off. ... On Sunday, Walker batted in the fifth spot for the first
time since Sept. 2 and 4, 1996, at Pittsburgh. He started in the
fifth spot for the Rockies several times in 1995, and early in his
career at Montreal he batted in the fifth, sixth and even the
seventh spot several times. ... Colorado, 44-33 going into Monday
night's game at San Diego, is assured of a winning record at the
All-Star break for just the second time in the franchise's
eight-year history. The other time was 1995. San Diego: With 57 RBI, Bret Boone is three short of matching
Roberto Alomar's 1990 total of 60, most ever by a Padres second
baseman. ... Boone has driven in 19 runs in his last 11 games and
needs only six more to match his 1999 total of 63 in 152 games with
Atlanta. ... Thirty of Boone's 57 RBI, or 53 percent, have come in
only seven games. He has a pair of six-RBI games, five- and
four-RBI nights and three three-RBI games.
